Although the Government has accepted in full the pay recommendations in the latest Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration (DDRB) report, with a 2.8% pay rise for NHS dentists, backdated to April, the final uplift to contract values for GDPs awaits the result of a consultation on expenses. Increases for associates are not covered in this award, but are a matter for individual practices or corporates.

A recent article in the British Dental Journal suggests that there is a link between poor oral health and COVID-19 complications. The authors suggest that the connection between the oral microbiome and such complications should be investigated in the process of better understanding the outcomes of COVID-19 disease.

Commenting on the recent Summer Economic Statement delivered by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Rishi Sunak, NASDAL’s Charles Linaker says that the most important Covid-19 measure of which dentists need to be aware is a measure announced previously in relation to their 31 July payments on account due under Self-Assessment and the opportunity to defer their second payment on account for tax year 2019/20, due at the end of July, until next 31 January 2021.

A new study shows study shows the earliest ever teeth actually grew the same way that humans’ do today. Palaeontologist Per Ahlberg from the University of Uppsala in Sweden and colleagues have reported their study of fossil teeth from fish that lived over 400 million years ago in the latest issue of the journal Science. He said the ancient teeth were “carefully positioned, and new teeth are added in a very organised way.”

Dental Protection has called for the GDC to take a lenient approach to complaints related to the treatment of patients during this Covid-19 crisis. Raj Rattan, Dental Director at Dental Protection said: “The GDC and other regulators proactively issued a joint statement in March confirming they will fully consider the context which dentists have been practising in during this time when reviewing any complaints, they receive.”

For the period April 1 to June 7 there will be a 16.75% abatement of the contract value for all England practices except for those acting as Urgent Treatment Centres, who will have no abatement in view of their use of PPE. From June 8 all practices that have been able to operate will also have no abatement, subject to certain conditions outlined in the guidance.

Dentists in England are still waiting for answers on the general dental practice contract. GDPC Chair, Dave Cottam, has written to Health Minister Jo Churchill MP ‘to express our ongoing deep frustration’ over the lack of progress in confirming the contractual arrangements for general dental practice during the pandemic. Update on the length of the fallow period following treatments is also awaited.

A majority of dental professionals surveyed (68%) believe that their stress and anxiety levels have increased since the pandemic according to new research published by the Dental Defence Union (DDU). This comes as the DDU launches a new health and wellbeing e-learning course which focuses on strategies for coping with adversity.

In its latest update the GDC has published their latest accounts for 2019. They show their reserves have risen to £38.4 million, up from £24.6 million the previous year. This amounts to £280 from every dentist and £40 from every DCP going into their reserves from registrants’ Annual Retention Fee. They GDC has also offered advice on returning to work.
