OFT considering dental corporate merger

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is considering undertakings offered by Integrated Dental Holdings (IDH) and Associated Dental Practices (ADP) in relation to their merger, in lieu of a reference to the Competition Commission. In order to remedy competition concerns, the parties have offered to divest their practices and NHS contracts in the local areas in which the OFT identified concerns.

Pilots bailing out?

Dentists who volunteered as pilots for the new contract are fed up with the lack of information coming from their PCTs. A source told GDPUK that he has no idea how much he will be paid per patient under capitation and has been given little time to study the contract. Like some of his colleagues he is thinking of withdrawing from the scheme.

Whitening products back on sale

Dental Directory is resuming sales of whitening products with the blessing of Trading Standards. The only proviso set by Trading Standards is that these products are used by registered professionals in the surgery. The company says that although its stocks are limited, its shelves should be fully stocked within the next seven working days.

Cameron hopes he’s fixed it

“We have listened, we have learned, and we are improving our plans for the NHS”, said David Cameron at the relaunch of his Government’s plans for the NHS. He has accepted the core recommendations of the report from the NHS Future Forum. Plans for dentistry are largely unchanged however.

Numbers seen up, treatments down

The latest report from the NHS Information Centre shows that up to 31 March 2011, for the sixth consecutive quarter, the number of NHS dental patients seen has exceeded the March 2006 baseline. However in the previous quarter up to December 2010, both courses of treatment and UDAs fell albeit by small amounts.
