Post-menopausal women at risk of losing teeth

New research forecasts that over one in four post-menopausal women are likely to suffer tooth loss over a five year period, and the risk increases to nearly 90 per cent if other risk factors are present, especially diabetes and if they smoke. The impact of the menopause may go some way to explain why women more often suffer from tooth loss, despite generally having better oral health than men.

Mobile dental service launched

A doorstep dental service has been launched in Worcestershire. The mobile dental unit, funded by NHS Worcestershire, was started in November 2010 and is now fully operational, serving nearly 50 care homes across the county. The specialised unit provides a full range of dental care, from cleaning teeth to root canal therapy.

Dentists to pay more for pensions

The Department of Health today launched a consultation on proposed changes to the level of contributions made by NHS Pension Scheme members towards their pension. It aims to secure £2.8bn savings per year by 2014/15 through increasing pension contributions from those in the NHS by an average of 3.2%.

Lansley expresses hope for new contract pilots

In the last health questions of this parliamentary session, Andrew Lansley said the dental pilots were specifically intended to secure a more preventive approach to dentistry. He also said they were moving from a system that simply incentivises activity to one that is much more focused on quality and outcomes.

Virtual drill wins award

A new device for training dental students has ), received the excellence in education innovation award at the Medical Futures ceremony. It is called called HapTEL (haptics in technology-enhanced learning). The project is a collaboration between dentists from Guy`s Hospital, technical developers from Reading University and Birmingham City University, and e-learning professionals from King`s College London.

GDC issues reminders to DCPs

The General Dental Council (GDC) has issued advice to dental care professionals (DCPs) that their annual retention fee (ARF) is due at the end of July. It has also reminded them of the importance of keeping track of their continuing professional development (CPD) hours by making their end of year declarations.
