Final changes to NHS pensions published

The Government has published the final details of its proposed changes to the NHS pension scheme in England and Wales.  This follows months of discussions between the health service unions and the Department of Health.  Discussions are now at an end and the unions are returning to their Executives to consider the offer.

GDC told to prioritise oral cancer detection

Speaking in response to a question in the House of Lords by dentist Baroness Gardner of Parkes, Earl Howe said that he was asking the General Dental Council (GDC) to increase the priority given to the detection of oral cancer, and to include it as a recommended topic in continuing professional development (CPD) for dentists. There is to be a public consultation on the GDC’s proposals in 2012.

Professor warns of fruit juice dangers to teeth

Kathy Harley, Dean of the Dental Faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons and a consultant in paediatric dentistry, has warned that half of five-year-olds had signs of wear to their tooth enamel. She warned that children who are encouraged to drink large amounts of fruit juice as part of their 'five a day' could be damaging their teeth.

BDA surveys its student members on Foundation Training

The British Dental Association (BDA) has launched a survey of dental students involved in this year’s round of applications for Dental Foundation Training (DFT) places. The research will put together a full picture of the experiences of final-year student BDA members that the BDA will feed back to the organisers of the DFT application process.

Bainbridge calls for DPA meeting

Neville Bainbridge who has been a member of the Dental Professionals Association for over 50 years and until 21st January was its Treasurer, has called for a Special General Meeting of the Association. This will decide on the demutualisation of the DPA. He and the acting chairman, Reg Short, have a agreed a framework for the meeting.

CODE in secret merger talks with DPA

The Council of the Dental Practitioners’ Association (formerly GDPA) has agreed to hand over the assets of the association to a new company GDPA Ltd in which CODE will have a majority shareholding. DPA members have not been informed and GDPUK understands that the DPA has received legal advice that the Council’s actions may acted ‘beyond its powers’ in not holding a general meeting of the Association.
