Heart Your Smile grants aim to boost oral health in the community
It’s been a busy few months for newly registered dental charity, Heart Your Smile. With its first anniversary celebrated in March this year, Heart Your Smile launched a number of new initiatives – the first of which is Innovation 360°. To qualify for an Innovation 360° Grant, simply complete an on-line application by 30th June 2013.

BDA issues new dental public health warning
A Government commitment to improve the oral health of the youngest children could be jeopardised if the shortfall in the dental public health workforce is not addressed, the British Dental Association (BDA) has warned. Dr Christopher Allen, the Chair of the BDA’s Dental Public Health Committee, said: “There is a longstanding shortage of Consultants in Dental Public Health. Pre-April, approximately one-third of primary care trusts did not have access to CDPH advice.”

Glasgow's cost of dental treatment is highest in Scotland
Dental treatment costs more in Glasgow than anywhere else in Scotland – around £57 for adults and £73 for children. NHS Ayrshire and Arran spent the second highest amount per patient, £52 for adults and £71 for children. Orkney was the cheapest for adults  at £23, while in the Western Isles the cost for children was the lowest at £32.

Sue Greening appointed MBE

Sue Greening appointed MBE
There was only one dental professional in this year’s Birthday Honours list. An MBE goes to Sue Greening, Clinical Director, Gwent Community Dental Service, Aneurin Bevan Health Board, for services to dentistry in the UK. She is a past president of the BDA and chaired its community dental services committee.

Milne optimistic that new contract will work
Speaking to the Conference of Local Dental Committees (LDCs) John Milne, chair of the General Dental Practice Committee (GDPC) said that he was optimistic that the new contract now being piloted will work. But he warned that there were still issues to be addressed including funding and delivereing treatment as well as prevention.

Howe responds to LDC emergency motion

Howe responds to LDC emergency motion
The LDC Conference passed an emergency motion following the recent tragic suicide of a Leeds dentist. It supported the BDA’s call for an independent inquiry. Responding in his speech to the conference health minister Earl Howe extended his personal sympathy to the dentist’s family. He said ministers believed there was no place for bullying in the NHS and that the circumstances surrounding this case needed to be investigated.
