Leaders from 28 organisations across the dental sector have joined forces to launch a set of universal principles for good complaint handling. The six core principles provide a simple template for best practice, helping professionals and patients to get the most from feedback and complaints, for the benefit of all. They set out a clear picture of what patients can expect when providing feedback or making a complaint.

The campaign group Action on Sugar is demanding a ban on freakshakes and all milkshakes with more than 300 calories. It surveyed milkshakes sold in restaurants and fast food shops in the UK and found they contained "grotesque levels of sugar and calories", with one containing 39 teaspoons of sugar or 1,280 calories. Dental Protection is calling on the Government to introduce a package of legal reforms that would protect dentists from the spiralling cost of clinical negligence claims. Raj Rattan, Dental Director at Dental Protection said: “It is not unusual for the costs awarded to claimant lawyers to be significantly higher than the damages paid to the patient.”

Last week saw the release of the latest practice goodwill statistics from the NASDAL (The National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers) survey released. Perhaps rather aptly for the current political climate, the survey for the quarter ending 31st July 2018 shows a divided country with a huge disparity in practice goodwill values.
The BDA in Scotland is calling on the Scottish Government to make faster progress in tackling long-standing oral health inequalities, following a new report on children’s dental health. Robert Donald, Chair of the BDA’s Scottish Council said: “Dentists have applauded the progress secured through Childsmile, but this data is a stark reminder that the Scottish Government cannot rest on its laurels”.

Introducing a new prevention strategy Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, said that there must be a greater focus and spending on prevention, not just cure, in the future. BDA chair, Mike Armstrong, commented: “Sadly he’s had more to say about broccoli than wholly preventable oral diseases that are costing our NHS millions.”
