| The CQC has announced that dentists will pay £800 for a single practice and £1,600 for 2-3 practices. There is a sliding scale up to £48,000 for more than 100 locations. The fee is payable in April 2011 and will be payable every year thereafter. |

The full results of the Adult Dental Health Survey (2009) have been announced. Across almost all of the indicators of oral health and disease there has been a continued improvement in adults’ dental health. Chief Dental Officer for England, Barry Cockcroft, has issued a letter on recall interval guidance. He says that since the publication of the NICE guidelines in 2004, a great deal of work has been done by the NHS on how to put the guidelines into practice effectively, and it is important that this is shared more widely with colleagues.

| Dentists from India and other non-EU countries have been caught in bureaucratic wrangles between professional governing bodies in Britain, a campaign group have claimed. Candidates who complete the first part of LDS held by the Royal College of Surgeons of England are not being allowed to complete the second part due to wrangles between the Royal College and the General Dental Council (GDC). |

A year after changes laboratory work were introduced the General Dental Council wants to remind dentists and technicians about their responsibilities. Patients who are provided with a dental appliance must be offered a copy of the statement of manufacture. A record should be kept of whether or not the patient chooses to accept it. If the patient doesn’t accept a copy, the dentist must keep the statement for the lifetime of the appliance.

| In the first case of its kind, the General Dental Council (GDC), has successfully prosecuted a non-dentist for performing tooth whitening.. In London 48 year old Paul Hill pleaded guilty practising dentistry. He has been ordered to pay a total of £6,265 in fines and his company has been ordered to pay a total of £6,765. The amounts include costs of £5,500 for the GDC. |

| George Osborne’s Budget brought a modest amount of good news for dentists, according to the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants (NASDA). Mr Osborne confirmed that he regards the 50 per cent personal tax rate as a temporary measure and a few high earning dentists who have incorporated are likely to welcome the reduction in tax payable on profits. |
