Nicholson points way to future

NHS chief executive Sir David Nicholson has published details of the reformed commissioning system and the emerging national board. The purpose of the new NHS Commissioning Board to use ‘the commissioning budget of around £80bn a year to secure the best possible health outcomes for patients and communities.’ The Board will also directly commission NHS dentistry.

Prisoners claim compensation for poor dentistry

Prisoners at Wakefield Prison have been claiming compensation for poor dental care. The 24 inmates settled out of court with the NHS and were given a total of £47,000. They were also awarded more than £300,000 in legal fees.

Heart Your Smile launched at Showcase

A new dental campaign:‘Heart Your Smile’, was recently started in the UK. The campaign aims to improve confidence of dentists in the UK dental profession, and it took place at Showcase in Birmingham. Launching it, dentist James Goolnik, spoke about measures for improving the dental profession.

BDA calls for decontamination review timetable to be set

The British Dental Association (BDA) has written to Department of Health to press for the announcement of a timetable for the review of HTM 01-05 promised by the Chief Dental Officer in 2009. The BDA’s call coincides with the publication of new research on time-dependent recontamination rates of sterilised dental instruments in the 22 October issue of the British Dental Journal.

Remember your retention fee says GDC

The General Dental Council (GDC) is reminding all dentists not to miss the 31 December deadline to pay their annual retention fee (ARF) and remain on the register.It is important to remember that if dentists don’t pay, they will be putting their registration at risk. The GDC will not be able to accept any payments received after midnight on 31 December 2011.

Associates’ pension rights in danger

The British Dental Association (BDA) has issued advice to associates following its meeting with the Department of Health. The changes, coming into effect on 7 November, concern practices that were acquired via the partnership route. Associates working for corporates are advised by the BDA to discuss their situation with their central HR department as a matter of urgency.

NHS Commissioning Board Authority goes live

The NHS Commissioning Board Authority, a special health authority and the shadow form of the NHS Commissioning Board, is now in operation. Sir David Nicholson, Chief Executive designate said: ‘Building this new system over the next two years, while delivering for our patients, increasing productivity and improving the quality of care, is a major challenge'.
