This will decide on the demutualisation of the DPA. He and the acting chairman, Reg Short, have a agreed a framework for the meeting. |

Reports have reached GDPUK that the Chief Dental Officer (CDO) Barry Cockcroft is set to announce that 70-80 extra Foundation Year places will be made available this summer. This may partly defuse the row of the recruitment exercise, but up to 100 newly qualified UK dentists could be left without a job in NHS dentistry. The CDO will be briefing the dental press on the afternoon of Thursday March 1 and will be giving a talk at the Dentistry Show in Birmingham on Friday. |

| The Council of the Dental Practitioners’ Association (formerly GDPA) has agreed to hand over the assets of the association to a new company GDPA Ltd in which CODE will have a majority shareholding. DPA members have not been informed and GDPUK understands that the DPA has received legal advice that the Council’s actions may acted ‘beyond its powers’ in not holding a general meeting of the Association. |

| Prescription and dental patients’ charges in England will be increased on 1st April. No announcements have been made for Scotland Northern Ireland or Wales. The changes in charges were outlined by Health Minister Simon Burns and will be laid before Parliament soon. |

| The resignation of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) chief executive Cynthia Bower follows a critical review by the Department of Health, despite denials that the two facts are linked. Ms Bower has agreed to remain in post until autumn 2012 to allow for an ‘appropriate handover’. She will continue to collect a salary until she leaves the CQC, but there will be no final ‘lump sum’ payment. |

| Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley has announced an additional £28 million of funding for dentistry in order to ‘increase the number of people able to access an NHS dentist’. The Department of Health said that 820,000 more people had already been given access since May 2010. The extra funding will, it is claimed, enable an extra 180,000 to be seen bringing ‘the number of extra people now able to access an NHS dentist to one million’. |

Speaking in a debate on the PIP breast implants, Labour MP for Rhondda Chris Bryant suggested that laser surgery clinics to the list of places to be investigated. He also wanted the Secretary of State to look into private dentists, ‘many of which are encouraging patients to undergo operations that they certainly do not need’ |
