The study shows that for single-tooth replacement, dental implants were generally either cost saving or cost-effective in comparison with traditional fixed dental prostheses. For patients with mandibular edentulism, dental implants were associated with higher initial costs. However, the consensus among most studies was that, over the long term, dental implants represent a cost-effective treatment option.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) must properly understand the reality of primary care dentistry if it is to make a fresh start in regulating the sector, the British Dental Association (BDA) has warned. Martin Fallowfield, the BDA PEC Chair, said: “We are pleased to see the CQC articulating its intention to make a new start. Dental practices have, thus far, endured a mixed experience of the organisation.

A consultation on migrant access and their financial contribution to NHS provision in England has been launched by the Department of Health. No decisions have been made and they are seeking views as to whether new migrant charges for dental services is something that ‘should, and could practically be pursued’, or any alternative proposals.

The Government has published its response to a consultation on the management of HIV-infected healthcare workers. It has concluded that healthcare workers with HIV will carry out certain surgical and dental procedures if they are on effective treatment, have very low or undetectable levels of HIV in the blood, and are regularly monitored by both their treating and occupational health physicians. The new arrangements are expected to come into effect in 2014.

Linda Alyson Fernandes was convicted of six counts of fraud by false representation. Between January and May 2012, she used a spare set of keys for the ‘Aqua Dental Spa’ in Manchester Square in London to enter the premises without authorisation in order to use a credit card machine to transfer money from the Practice’s account to her own personal account. Through this and other methods she fraudulently obtained money from the Practice totalling a sum of at least £3,382.00.

When the first five year cycle of continuing professional development (CPD) ended last month for dental care professionals (DCPs), of the 39,336 DCPs in the cycle, 29,416 have completed all their hours and 2,303 have yet to declare any. Failure to complete the necessary hours can lead to removal from the Register.
