BDA and BDIA announce new ?Strategic Partnership?

The British Dental Association (BDA) and the British Dental Industry Association (BDIA) announced at the BDA Conference that they have agreed a new ‘Strategic Partnership’ allowing both organisations to work more closely over the coming months and years. The Partnership aims to deliver a comprehensive business solution for the profession and the industry through activities such as both the BDA’s Conference in the spring and BDIA Showcase in the autumn of each year.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has responded to David Cameron’s first landmark speech on health, saying that the failure to include dentistry in Health debate was hurting patients and taxpayers. PEC chairman, Mick Armstrong said: "Successive governments have failed to even consider 'oral health' as a part of the 'health' agenda. This government must not make the same mistake”.

`Safeguarding` becomes recommended CPD

The General Dental Council (GDC) has confirmed that 'safeguarding children and young people' and 'safeguarding vulnerable adults' are to be included as recommended continuing professional development (CPD) topics for dental professionals. The aim is to increase awareness about these important topics so that all dental professionals feel confident and equipped to raise any concerns about abuse or neglect of vulnerable people.

Ministerial responsibility for dentistry announced

The Rt Hon Alistair Burt MP  has been given responsibility for primary care at the Department of Health. This incorporates dentistry and ophthalmic responsibilities and includes GP contract reform, Out of Hours reform, pharmacy and primary care commissioning policy. He entered Parliament for the first time in 1983 (as MP for Bury North until 1997) and is now the Conservative MP for north east Bedfordshire.

BDA calls on Hunt to act over GDC

The British Dental Association (BDA) has called on returning Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to tackle “unfinished business” on professional regulation. They have written asking him to launch a fundamental review of dental regulation. The Chair of the PEC, Mick Armstrong, said: “Professional regulation cannot get bumped to the bottom of the in-tray for the Health team.  The unambiguous and sustained failures at the General Dental Council are unfinished business, and require a clear response.”

New team of Health Ministers announced - AMENDED

New team at Department of Health announced

Following last week’s General Election, the Prime Minister has announced a new Government team. The main changes involve filling posts left vacant by Lib-Dem MPs. Jeremy Hunt MP for South West Surrey continues as Secretary of State for Health although Lord Howe has left the team.

The initial published announcement from DH included Lord Howe as a Minister, but this was changed during the day on 13th May.

Professor Nairn Wilson CBE has been inaugurated as the British Dental Association’s (BDA’s) 129th President in a ceremony on the opening day of the Association’s annual conference in Manchester. Commenting on his inauguration Professor Wilson said: “In accepting the office of President of the Association, I dedicate myself to serve the Association to the best of my ability.”

FGDP(UK) launches Open Standards Initiative

The FGDP (UK) has launched its Open Standards Initiative, which offers all dental professionals access to the highly regarded standards and guidance documents produced by them whether they are members of the Faculty or not. The Dean, Trevor Ferguson, said: “We want our standards and guidance documents to reach the widest possible audience for the benefit of the profession and the patients we treat.”
