BDA tells ministers: don’t cut bursaries for dental students

The BDA has warned the government that it risks shutting students from poorer backgrounds out of the profession, following media coverage suggesting that the Government plans to cut bursaries for student doctors and dentists. Paul Blaylock, Chair of the British Dental Association's Students' Committee said: “If the funding is cut for student dentists, the government will shut talented young people out of the dental profession.”

Dentists have a key role to play – Minister

Health Minister, Alistair Burt MP, said that dentists have a key role to play in improving child dental health through prevention. He also said that a new contract, based on the outcomes of the current prototypes could be rolled-out nationally in 2018-19. He was replying to a House of Commons debate, imitated by dentist MP, Sir Paul Beresford. The minister will address the BDA conference on May 27.

Peter Ward warns Jeremy Hunt on dentists’ low morale

At a conference last week, BDA Chief Executive Peter Ward told Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt that dentists don't feel trusted and they feel subject to oppressive regulation; they feel they are bullied by systems. He said: “All health professionals want to deliver high quality results, but sometimes the blockages in the system are those that prevent them doing it.”

Dentist censured by GDC for using counterfeit equipment

Fizan Tahir, who bought equipment on eBay, was censured by a recent GDC hearing concerning the use of counterfeit dental devices. This highlighted the dangers to both patient and professional registration from using counterfeit and non-compliant devices. He was put on conditions, which included carrying out an equipment audit every three months in all his practices.

Manchester clinic closes leaving patients in the lurch

Manchester Evening News has reported that hundreds of patients have been left out of pocket after Pure Clinic, based in Manchester closed. Many customers were angry and frustrated that work hasnâ€™t been done at all or was only partially completed. Many had paid Â£1,095 for its â€˜six month smileâ€™ deal. Others paid for whitening and other cosmetic dental work. One is reported to have paid Â£15,000 but no work has been done.

Common sense at last on amalgam - BDA

The BDA has celebrated the final ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, with confirmation that individual nations can work to gradually scale down the use of dental amalgam. BDA Chair Mick Armstrong said: “This is a triumph for common sense and BDA lobbying based on a considerable weight of sound research and science.”

GDC wants to hear your views on Case Examiners

The General Dental Council (GDC) is consulting on its plans to introduce Case Examiners, to speed the Fitness to practise process. Complaints will be dealt with, they say, more quickly and efficiently making it safer for patients and a less stressful experience for dentists or dental care professionals. Case Examiners will agree undertakings with dentists where this is proportionate. The consultation is now open and will run until March 14.

Case examiners to start at GDC

Following debates in both Houses of Parliament the Order permitting the GDC to appoint case examiners has been passed into law and will become effective later this year. The GDC ‘welcomed’ the Lords debate, where they were slated by Lord Hunt, and said that consultation on implementing the Order would start on Feb 1.

BDA Museum appoints new Honorary Curator

Dr Margaret Wilson, (not pictured) the current editor of Dental Historian and a dental clinician and academic for nearly 40 years, has been named the new Honorary Curator of the British Dental Association (BDA) Museum. Dr Wilson was appointed following the retirement of Professor Stanley Gelbier, who had held the position since 1989. A former Honorary Curator of the Dental Hospital Museum in Manchester, she is currently editor of the Dental Historian journal for the Lindsay Society and President of her BDA Branch.
