People in Cornwall face a wait of up to 18 months to ‘register’ with an NHS dentist amid growing concerns that health services there are at breaking point. The county has a backlog of more than 14,000 people who want to register with an NHS dentist. Some residents must travel more than 70 miles to find one of the few practices in neighbouring Devon that are still taking on patients.

While acknowledging the result of the 2016 referendum on the EU, in their manifesto the Liberal Democrats say there should be another referendum once the terms of Brexit are known. They say they will save the NHS ‘by putting a penny in the pound on Income Tax to give the NHS and social care services the cash injection they need’.

Swiss investor Jacobs Holding has bought UK dental chain Southern Dental for an undisclosed sum, from its founder in its third attempt at a sale, according to wealthmonitor.com. The corporate owns 80 dental practices in the south of England and was founded in 2006 by Mazdak Eyrumlu, who will be exiting the business as part of the transaction.

More than 10,000 defibrillators in the UK may be affected by a fault, which means they will not work in an emergency. The fault affects LIFEPAK 1000 devices, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said. The manufacturer, Physio-Control, has sent a safety alert to those with the devices concerned, urging them to check the battery connection.

Amid an array of promises for the NHS, there is a promise to make ‘a concerted effort to address poor childhood oral health in England’. Launching its manifesto for the forthcoming general election, the BDA has said political indifference is now jeopardising the sustainability of the dental service in England, as they called on all parties to set out their plans on prevention. BDA Chair Mick Armstrong said: “Political indifference to dentistry will guarantee a preventable disease remains the leading cause of hospital admissions among our children.”

The overwhelming majority of dentists and GPs are backing calls for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme to be expanded to school aged boys, according to a new survey. Parliamentarians from all parties have signed an open letter to the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt MP, urging him to ensure that the UK doesn’t miss this opportunity to eradicate some of the fastest-rising cancers in the developed world.
