Pregnant women with gum disease are significantly more likely to go into early labour, according to the findings of a new study. Research discovered that women who entered labour early were one and a half times more likely (45%) to have gum disease than women who experienced a perfect pregnancy (29%).

The BDA has called on the Government to recognise the workforce crisis in dentistry with Brexit looming, as new evidence from GDC suggests up to a third of the UK’s 6,300 European qualified dental registrants intend to leave UK dentistry. BDA’s Mick Armstrong said: “Government needs to wake up, and smell the coffee. NHS dentistry can’t be run without dentists.”

The American Dental Association (ADA) has applauded USA Congress for passing the Action for Dental Health Act. For years, dentists have worked to improve access to oral health care for underserved Americans and have championed this patient-benefiting legislation. “This is a tremendous victory for dentistry and patients everywhere,” said Jeffrey M. Cole, ADA president.

Professor Paul Coulthard has started his role as Dean for Dentistry and Director of the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. He joins Queen Mary from the University of Manchester where he was Dean of the Manchester Dental School for five years.

The NHS has told Superdrug it could do more to protect the mental health of customers who want injections to smooth skin or plump lips. The High Street chain has said it will tighten its screening of Botox customers for mental health issues after these concerns were raised. Health minister Jackie Doyle-Price has said: "the desire to change appearance can be symptomatic of a mental disorder".

Thousands of young children are to benefit from a new £1.5m programme aimed at transforming the dental health of under 5s across Greater Manchester. The new initiative will see supervised toothbrushing introduced in schools and nurseries plus dental care incorporated into health visitor checks in areas where particularly large numbers of young children suffer from tooth decay.

A former MP and health minister, Nicola Blackwood has been given a peerage and appointed as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care. Ms Blackwood became the MP for Oxford West and Abingdon in 2010, and a health minister from 2016, but lost her seat in the 2017 general election to the Liberal Democrats’ Layla Moran.
