The United Kingdom’s recent decision to vaccinate boys and girls from HPV-cancers has inspired the formation of a European-wide group to put an end to the virus: the new ‘HPV Action Network’. The alliance has been formed by the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) with the goal to end all cancers caused by HPV across Europe.

Brushing teeth frequently is linked with lower risks of atrial fibrillation and heart failure, according to a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Previous research suggests that poor oral hygiene leads to bacteria in the blood, causing inflammation in the body. Inflammation increases the risks of atrial fibrillation and heart failure.

The Telegraph reports that Sainsbury’s is putting sugary cereals on its top shelves in a new trial that experts hope will prevent children pestering their parents for popular snacks that have a high level of sugar or salt. Tesco is also taking part in the trial, though a spokesman said it had not moved any sugary cereals on to its top shelves.

Unless you spent the last week on Mars, you will know that the Conservatives won General Election with large enough majority to implement Brexit and other reforms. All pre-election Health Ministers were returned, so no immediate changes at the NHS or in dentistry. But Dr Sarah Wollaston who defected from the Conservatives was defeated, so a new chair will be needed for the Health Select Committee.

The strategy described the organisation’s vision, values and strategic aims, and provided high-level information on the expenditure plans to support the achievement of those aims over the period.

Jo is a Dental Nurse and Oral Health Educator at Devonshire House in Cambridgeshire.

The BDA has called for the next government to end competitive tendering across the NHS, after the latest fiasco saw a process for commissioning orthodontic services across parts of the West Midlands abandoned yesterday after over 6 months. The decade-long contracts are estimated to be worth over £65 million. BDA Chair Mick Armstrong said: "This fiasco shows why it’s time to end this race to the bottom in our NHS.”

The North South divide in England is turned on its head when it comes to children’s dentistry and attendance at an NHS dentist, says Dr Robin Mills, a specialist in paediatric dentistry and former BSPD President, who has used NHS Digital figures to produce a map, which shows that the children in the North of England are more likely to have seen an NHS dentist in the last year.

Two new members will join the BDA Principal Executive Committee for the 2020-22 triennium. They are Raj Majithia (London) and Laura Cross (Scotland). Re-elected were Alison Lockyer (East Midlands and Central), Victor Chan (South Eastern) and Tony Kilcoyne (UK-wide). They take office on January 1, 2020.
