Local Government Association says change is needed in tackling child oral health

A whole systems approach is needed to tackling childhood tooth decay, according to a new report by the Local Government Association. It contains a whole range of examples of the steps that need to be taken to achieve success. Many of the areas included are places where there have traditionally been high rates of tooth decay, but where signiﬁcant improvements are now being made.

Doubts raised over safety and efficacy of teething gels

An article in the Australian Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health asks whether teething gels safe or even necessary for our children, A review of the safety, efficacy and use of topical lidocaine teething gels recommends that regulatory bodies should consider removing the indication for teething or limiting the age of use to older children.

Over one thousand dentists sign Daily Telegraph letter

The letter, drafted by Tony Kilcoyne and headlined ‘A lack of funding and an increase in bureaucracy have left NHS dentistry in a rotten state’, was published in the Daily Telegraph on January 2. It had been ‘signed’ by 1,003 dentists including, it would appear, the chair of the General Dental Practice Committee, Dave Cottam.

Jason Wong made MBE in New Year Honours

General Dental Practitioner, Dr Jason Wong, becomes an MBE in the New Year Honours List 2020. It has been awarded for services to Dentistry and Oral Health. He has interests in Oral Health promotion & Implant Dentistry, and is an LDC Secretary and Local Dental Network Chair. Also honoured is well known retired Manchester dentist, Dr Peter Kurer, awarded BEM for services to Holocaust Education.

Man nearly chokes to death after denture mishap

A 75-year-old man in China almost choked to death after accidentally swallowing his dentures while eating a meal. The dentures were lodged in his throat for about eight hours before they were removed during emergency surgery, according to a report by DrBicuspid. Zhu Benbiao was rushed to the hospital by his family after they noticed he had difficulties breathing and eating.

Dental bus to bring oral health for homeless

One of Winchester’s largest companies has brought smiles back to the city’s homeless community by providing vital funds throughout 2020 for their dental care. Simplyhealth, owners of Denplan, has contributed funds for another year through its Local Community Impact Fund for a mobile dental bus - operated by the charity Dentaid.

Longest tooth extracted

The Guinness Book of Records has recognized a German dentist from Offenbach for extracting a 37.2-millimeter (1.46-inch) tooth out of the mouth of a patient who had complained about severe pain. Dr Max Lukas had extracted the giant tooth from a patient in nearby Mainz who sought help in 2018 for severe dental pain.
