NHS contract values up only 0.5% this year

Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, has decided to increase NHS contract values by only 0.5% this year. In a letter the CDO, Barry Cockcroft, says that it had already been announced that the pay element would be frozen for this year and next. In addition the expenses part would be subject to a 4% improvement in ‘efficiency and productivity’. The BDA has said that the ‘uplift’ is really a pay cut.

Treatment for a royal smile?

Kate Middleton is said to have been receiving treatment from Harley Street dentist Dr Didier Fillion even before her engagement. Dr Tif Qureshi, from the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, says it looks as though Kate has been secretly having orthodontic treatment. “It looks as though she’s had some whitening treatment and tooth edge augmention to make her teeth all the correct length,” he said.

Lansley to address BDA Conference

The Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley, is to address British Dental Conference and Exhibition at Manchester’s Central Convention Complex on Thursday May 19. Mr Lansley is expected to participate in a question and answer session following his address, which replaces the previously-advertised appearance by Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Lord Howe.

Come back PCTs – all is forgiven

The Health Select Committee, chaired by former health secretary, Stephen Dorrell, has reported on commissioning in the light of the Health Bill, which has been put on hold by the Government. The committee recommends that the GP consortia should commission both primary and secondary care, including dentistry. They should however be enlarged to include other health professionals and be more accountable to the public. If this is accepted they will look very much like PCTs do now.

Minister announces 62 pilots

The Government has now officially announced that the new contract pilots will start in ‘the summer’. 62 practices will trial new ideas based on registration, capitation and quality. “For the first time dentists will be paid for the quality of the treatment they give rather than the number of treatments provided”, Health Minister Lord Howe said..
