Nicholson to retire next year
Sir David Nicholson is to retire in March next year from his post as NHS England chief executive. He has been under pressure to go since the Francis report into Stafford NHS Trust, but it appears that the early announcement will allow for a planned succession. Sir David was appointed NHS chief executive in 2007.

Dentistry in the UK is facing a challenging new era and practitioners should join the BDA to ensure they are prepared for it, said Martin Fallowfield, Chair of the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee, at its recent conference. He predicted that current economic problems and funding pressures will continue. It is also possible, he said, that dentistry will be faced with the possibility of further regulation.

BDHF warns about sugary foods and drinks
Parents are putting the oral health of infants and young children in harm's way by giving them ill-advised foods and drinks, a new report reveals. According to the Diet and Nutrition Survey of Infants and Young Children (DNSIYC), two in every three (62 per cent) children aged 12-18 months had ‘sugar, preserves and confectionary' foods, says the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF). One in four (26 per cent) 12-18 month old infants also enjoyed fruit juice and soft drinks.

Dentists’ representatives from across the UK have condemned the General Dental Council (GDC) decision to permit direct access to dental hygienists and therapists.

This reflects the opinions of a majority of dentists from all over the United Kingdom who believe the GDC decision was political and not based on the best interests of patients.

The Northern Ireland health minister Edwin Poots says he is considering fluoridation of the water supply to ensure fluoride is delivered to poorer people and dental disease is more often prevented. He said “The 2007 Oral Health Strategy stated that the greatest oral health gain is likely to be achieved through community water fluoridation."

Dentist Abi Sampa wows on The Voice
Dentist Abi Sampa showed the coaches how to smile on The Voice with her singing on Saturday evening on BBC. Abi, who is 27, qualified two years ago, and sang her version of the Oasis song Stop Crying Your Heart Out, adding an Asian influence.

Danny O'Donoghue was most impressed, and chose Abi to complete his team of ten in this prime time reality show.
