Non-dentist appointed to chair GDC
The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced that William (Bill) Moyes has been appointed as its Chair from October 1, 2013. Mr Moyes currently holds non-executive directorships with the Office of Fair Trading, the Priory Hospital Group, and the Legal Services Board. He was previously Executive Chairman of Monitor, the independent regulator of NHS Foundation Trusts from 2004-2010.

Dentist offers £3,000 reward after arson attack
A petrol bomb was hurled through a Gateshead dentist's window causing £90,000 of damage to the surgery. The dentist is offering a £3,000 reward after the surgery was set on fire twice in one week. As police continue to hunt the culprits, practice coordinator, Sue Mulholland, has told of her disbelief that someone would want to do so much harm to the clinic.

He will take up the post in August 2013, taking over from Linda Wallace. He joins the BDA from the British Medical Association, where he has worked in a number of senior roles

GDC stance on whitening upheld
The General Dental Council (GDC) has welcomed a decision by the High Court that tooth whitening is the practice of dentistry and should only be undertaken by regulated dental professionals. The High Court has overturned a Magistrates’ Court’s decision to acquit Ms Lorna Jamous of the offences of practising dentistry and unlawfully carrying on the business of dentistry when not regulated by the GDC.

Secrets of Richard III’s death and life revealed

A general dental practitioner from London has revealed that the skull and jaw of King Richard III, found in a Leicester car park last year, were badly damaged, lending support to reports that the blows thatkilled him were so heavy that it drove the king’s crown into his head.

Dr Amit Rai, writing in the peer-reviewed British Dental Journal, said: “Richard is likely to have been killed by one of two blows to the base of the skull from some of the most advanced military weapons of the time.”

BDA calls for inquiry into dentist’s suicide
The British Dental Association (BDA) has written to health minister Earl Howe calling for a full inquiry into the circumstances around the death of a dentist in Leeds at the end of 2012. Dr John Milne, the Chair of the BDA’s General Dental Practice Committee, said: “The sad death of Dr Kamath is not the first suicide by a dentist under pressure in this way, but it must be the last.”
