Dental implants cost effective say researchers
The study shows that for single-tooth replacement, dental implants were generally either cost saving or cost-effective in comparison with traditional fixed dental prostheses. For patients with mandibular edentulism, dental implants were associated with higher initial costs. However, the consensus among most studies was that, over the long term, dental implants represent a cost-effective treatment option.

Wesleyan Assurance Society has announced the acquisition of the Practice Plan Group, comprising Practice Plan, provider of practice-branded dental membership plans, and Medenta, provider of patient finance to UK dental practices. Nick Dilworth, MD of Practice Plan, said: “Practice Plan is pleased to become part of one of the UK’s financially strongest mutuals with a great heritage and a reputation for customer service and product performance.”

Department asks whether migrants should pay for dentistry
A consultation on migrant access and their financial contribution to NHS provision in England has been launched by the Department of Health. No decisions have been made and they are seeking views as to whether new migrant charges for dental services is something that ‘should, and could practically be pursued’, or any alternative proposals.

London-based dental nurse struck off for fraud
Linda Alyson Fernandes was convicted of six counts of fraud by false representation. Between January and May 2012, she used a spare set of keys for the ‘Aqua Dental Spa’ in Manchester Square in London to enter the premises without authorisation in order to use a credit card machine to transfer money from the Practice’s account to her own personal account. Through this and other methods she fraudulently obtained money from the Practice totalling a sum of at least £3,382.00.

Four dentists to sit on new GDC

Four dentists to sit on new GDC
Only four dentists will sit on the new GDC in the autumn. One professional member (from Wales) is yet to be appointed. Technician David Smith has been reappointed, all others are new to the GDC. Five lay members have also been appointed to join the first appointed chair, Bill Moyes. There were nearly 300 applicants for the 12 places.
