It explores many of the different factors that impact upon our ability to practise dentistry safely and prompts the reader to consider how best to maintain their professional competence throughout a dental career. The digital version is available with three hours online CPD in 70 countries worldwide where its 64,000 members are based.

More dentists working in Scotland

The Scottish National Party (SNP) is claiming credit for more dentists and registrations in Scotland. Between 2006 and 2013, there were 793 additional dentists, an increase of 32.6%. The levels of registration with an NHS dentist have also increased since the party took office in May 2007. Scotland has gained 793 additional dentists - an increase of 32.6%, the SNP said.

Dentists are being urged to add their names to a petition opposing proposals to reduce the salary paid to Dental Foundation Trainees (DFTs) by more than £2,000. The petition, which warns of the practical implications for young dentists qualifying with increasing debts and calls for the proposal to be abandoned, has already attracted more than 5,000 signatures.

Rising Confidence reported amongst Dentists as Private Dental Care Increases

Continued recovery in the UK economy is driving a rise in confidence amongst dentists and a move towards more private dental care, according to the findings from the latest Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking Healthcare Confidence Index.

  • For the fifth Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking Healthcare Confidence Index in a row, dentists are the most optimistic about the overall future prospects of their profession when compared to GPs and pharmacists 
  • 80 per cent of dentists are concerned that the impending NHS dental contract will be inadequately funded
  • Over two thirds (69 per cent) of dentists are planning to grow their business in the next five years to combat this
