New competency framework for all prescribers

A new, updated and restructured Competency Framework for all prescribers has been published by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) after collaboration with the BDA, all the prescribing professions, and patients. The Framework outlines a common set of key competencies central to effective performance needed by all prescribers, regardless of their professional background.

GDC relents over dentists- addresses

The General Dental Council (GDC) has decided not to display any location details for registrants as part of planned reforms to its public register. Vicki Holden, the leading advocate for change, told GDPUK: “This is a really positive result for the profession which will protect the privacy of the registrants whilst maintaining public protection. Many thanks to everyone who supported this initiative along the way”.

GDC publishes its annual report for 2015

The General Dental Council has published its Annual Report and Accounts for 2015, giving details of the activities in 2015 and its aspirations for the year ahead, as it seeks to move forward with the work outlined in its roadmap Patients, Profession, Public and Performance.

William Moyes, GDC Chair said: "We are clear that our purpose is to protect patients. The last twelve months has seen us fundamentally change the way we work to prepare for further changes that lie ahead.”

Swearing patient fined

A woman was ordered to pay £155 after turning up drunk and swearing inside the premises of a Hereford dentist surgery. Louise Ruth Evans admitted a charge of being drunk and disorderly when she appeared at Hereford Magistrates Court. The Court was told: "She had obviously been drinking, officers smelt alcohol on her and she was unsteady on her feet.”

Minister David Mowat to oversee NHS dentistry

Following the recent Cabinet re-shuffle, Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has rearranged ministerial responsibilities in the Department of Health. Under Secretary David Mowat includes all elements of primary care – including dentistry and pharmacy in his portfolio and Nicola Blackwood will be responsible for Dental Public Health.

Almost all people (95%) who try can make NHS dental appointment

Almost all people (95%) who try can make NHS appointment

The annual survey of dental patients showed that 95% of people who tried to make an appointment for NHS dentistry were successful and 85% rated their experience as positive. Of the two fifths of respondents who had not tried to make an appointentt 38% mentioned private dentistry as the reason for not trying to get an NHS appointment; and 22% said they had “not needed to visit the dentist”.
