D-Mello update - he refuses to attend hearing

The Daily Mail reports that Desmond D'Mello, who faces more than 50 allegations of misconduct for poor hygiene, has refused to attend his Fitness to Practise hearing or be legally represented. It will however continue in his absence. His nurse, Caroline Surgey, was reprented by her lawyer who admitted all charges on her behalf.

Dentists extracting too many teeth reports The Times

In advance of the D’Mello case at the GDC, The Times has claimed that ‘thousands of teeth’ are needlessly extracted as surgeries are accused of ‘putting profit before patients’. Regulators said that dentists were extracting teeth to avoid offering complex treatment, for which they are paid the same by the NHS and that some dentists earn almost £500,000 a year in a system that rewards them ‘for cramming in as many patients as they can.’

D-Mello and Surgey case to start at GDC on 8 August

The GDC's Professional Conduct Committee's (PCC) hearing concerning Nottinghamshire dentist Desmond D'Mello and dental nurse Caroline Surgey is due to start on 8 August 2016. Failure to wear and change surgical gloves plus other related hygiene issues form a significant part of the charges against both of them. The case is expected to conclude by 2 September 2016.

No need to floss say US experts

Public Health England (PHE) is to review guidance on flossing after health officials in the US admitted that there is no scientific evidence to show it works. Current NHS guidance recommends flossing once a day but that is due to be reviewed in January. The US health department has now removed daily flossing from its list of dental recommendations.
