NHS dental statistics published

The annual report includes information on patients receiving NHS dental care in England for the 12 month period to 31 March 2016. Subjects covered include dental activity, clinical treatments and dental workforce. The number of patients seen by an NHS dentist up to 30 June 2016 is also included, with  22.1million adult patients (51.7%) and 6.7 million children (57.9%) being seen.

Moyes to head Gambling Commission

Culture Secretary Karen Bradley MP has appointed Bill Moyes as the new Chair of the Gambling Commision for a term of five years, commencing in September 2016. Bill Moyes also serves as Chair of the General Dental Council, which regulates dental professionals in the UK.

The cost of compliance to the average sole practitioner practice has increased by more than 1086% in the last decade. That’s according to a recent investigation by the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers (NASDAL). This sees an even greater increase than in 2014 when NASDAL last ran such an investigation (and a figure of 845%).

Botched dental survey costs almost £40,000

The Herald (Scotland) reports that a survey to uncover the truth about the finances of Scottish dentists cost almost £40,000 and just one dental practice submitted a response. Margie Taylor, chief dental officer for Scotland, said the survey was organised as the Review Body did not feel they had enough information about the costs of running a practice.

A father and son, John and Matthew Hargreaves, have been jailed for selling unsafe DIY teeth-whitening kits that left some users with bleeding gums from chemical burns. They were alleged to have made more than £3 million from the sales. They were jailed for 18 months at Merthyr Crown Court in South Wales.
