Mouthwash could damage your health

Frequent regular use of over-the-counter mouthwash was associated with increased risk of developing pre-diabetes/diabetes in this population, according to new research. Overweight people who use mouthwash twice a day are 50% more likely to develop diabetes. The anti-bacterial fluid could be killing off helpful microbes in the mouth.

Hammond disappoints NHS bosses

The extra money announced by the Chancellor in the Budget for the NHS in England is not enough, health service bosses say. Philip Hammond announced an immediate £350m boost for this winter followed by £1.6bn more next year for the front line above the rise already planned. He also said any pay rises for NHS staff next year would not need to come from the front-line budget.

The Faculty of General Dental Practice UK (FGDP(UK)) has published new guidance on the practice of dentistry for patients with dementia. With around 850,000 people in the UK with the condition - 5% of the population - the Faculty says that dental professionals need to understand it, and adapt their patient management and clinical decisions accordingly.

Professor Jimmy Steele CBE has died

Tributes have been paid to Emeritus Professor Jimmy Steele CBE, the former Head of Newcastle Dental School who died peacefully at the age of 55. In 2009, he chaired the Steele Review of NHS Dentistry, on which the piloting of a new GDS contract is based. He was appointed CBE in the 2012 New Year Honours and was awarded the BDA Tomes Medal last year.

The Sunday Telegraph has reported that grpwing numbers of young people are putting their health at risk by turning to teeth whitening products to achieve the perfect “celebrity” smile. However the BDA has warned them that buying these products online or from unlicensed operators can lead to the use of illegally strong whitening agents.
