Fluoridation report paves way to eliminating children’s dental health crisis

Following the publication of the ‘Water fluoridation: health monitoring in England 2018' report by Public Health England (PHE), the Oral Health Foundation, is calling on local authorities to use it as a springboard to introduce water fluoridation schemes and help address the children's oral health crisis being experienced in England.

GDC Reform - more radical than we thought

GDPUK.com has been stunned to learn that the General Dental Council and the General Medical Council have been involved in secret talks to merge the two statutory bodies.

A reliable government insider has told GDPUK that civil servants from the NHS and Whitehall have been mediating in the talks to establish a 'super council' which will carry out all regulatory functions with regard to doctors and dentists in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland). The proposal being discussed is that the GMC and GDC will be scrapped and the current functions administered by the organisations will be taken over by the Universal Medical and Dental Council.

Middle-aged tooth loss linked to increased coronary heart disease risk

Research presented to the American Heart Association has found that losing two or more teeth during middle age is associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk. Studies have shown that dental health problems, such as periodontal disease and tooth loss, are related to inflammation, diabetes, smoking and consuming less healthy diets.

Tooth-mounted sensor can detect food content

A tooth-mounted food sensor could wirelessly transmit radio frequency data about the foods you’re eating, reporting on sugar, salt, and alcohol in real-time. The creators, led by biomedical engineer Fiorenzo Omenetto of Tufts University, hope that the device will someday help consumers and researchers make “conclusive links between dietary intake and health.”

Advertising ban for fruit juices proposed

The vast majority of fruit juices will be banned from advertising aimed at children in a bid to cut down on juvenile obesity and tooth decay, the Government has proposed. Ads for all but the healthiest high-fibre breakfast cereals and most yoghurts should also be banned from ad breaks on children’s television, Public Health England has said.
