Inexcusable delays on pay uplift place services in peril says BDA

The BDA has received confirmation that dentists in England will get a 1.68 per cent uplift in their December pay run which should be seen in early January 2019. BDA Vice Chair Eddie Crouch said: “Dentists are usually bitterly resigned to the late application of the contract in addition to the paltry amount being offered. However this year’s delays represent a new low”.

Minister urged to extend HPV programme to boys up to age 18

Experts in the field of HPV and the diseases it can cause have written to the public health minister Steve Brine MP urging him to offer HPV vaccination to boys aged up to 18 as a catch-up programme. This would run alongside the vaccination programme for 12/13 year old boys which the government intends to rollout from September 2019.

Ombudsman bids to take over NHS complaints

The Health Service Journal has interviewed, ombudsman Rob Behrens who told them he would be arguing for changes to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s powers to allow him to launch investigations without a formal complaint and for the ombudsman to become a complaints standards authority with regulatory powers over the NHS.

The recent statement on prevention by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, has been welcomed by Professor Lennon on behalf of the British Fluoridation Society. He has delivered recommendations for taking the strategy forward and is supported by the Hull and East Yorkshire LDC and the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD).

Mouth cancer cases rise by 135% - widespread ignorance of symptoms

Cases of mouth cancer in the UK have more than doubled inside the last generation, yet an alarming number of people are still unable to identify the early warning signs and symptoms. Last year, more than 8,300 British adults were given the news that they had mouth cancer. This is an increase of around 135% compared with 20 years ago and the highest since records began.
