Driving offence could see you up before the GDC says Dental Protection

The results of a Freedom of Information request to the GDC by Dental Protection demonstrate how important it is for dental professionals to have comprehensive indemnity cover and dentolegal support when faced with GDC proceedings. Nearly one third (29%) of the warnings issued by the GDC in the past five years relate to personal conduct matters. Three quarters of these were given as a result of a driving offence.

New research uncovers poor oral health trends amongst both adults and children

The Simplyhealth Consumer Oral Health Survey report, highlights a number of jaw-dropping statistics regarding the nation’s oral health. Nearly a third of children have had between one and five fillings. Only 73% of adults brush twice a day or more, and 33% never floss and a quarter of adults (24%) claim to be “addicted” to sugar. Only 20% of adults think that poor oral health can be linked to heart disease.

Audit Office uncovers extent of healthcare penalty notices

A report from the National Audit Office has revealed 30% of healthcare fines issued since 2014 – 1.7 million notices, with a cash value of £188 million – were withdrawn because a valid exemption was confirmed to be in place following a challenge. The BDA has welcomed calls for clarity on NHS penalty charges and says it has hit innocent NHS patients.

GDC looks to reducing ARF with new strategy

The GDC is seeking views on its consultation on our strategy for 2020-22 ’Working with the dental team for public safety and confidence’’. working with the dental team for public safety and confidence’, its strategy for 2020-2022. In his foreword, chair Bill Moyes says that the overall decrease in GDC expenditure points to a significant reduction in the dentist ARF, and a small increase to the DCP ARF.

Outgoing BDA President warns MPs of dangers of antimicrobial resistance

In her last public engagement before leaving office as BDA President, Dr Susie Sanderson gave a presentation at an event organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Dentistry and Oral Health and co-hosted by the APPGs on Pharmacy and Antibiotics. It gave members of Parliament and Peers a chance to question a panel of experts in antimicrobial resistance across the main fields of primary care.

Northern Ireland: 2.73% pay uplift for GDPs approved

BDA Northern Ireland has written formally to accept the Department of Health’s GDP pay uplift offer for 2018/19. It will see the DDRB recommendation of 2% net of expenses being applied, equating to an actual uplift of 2.73% backdated to 1^st April 2018. According to Department of Health, this represents a total investment of £2.9 million in regional dental services.
