Failure to diagnose oral health conditions can prolong patients’ stay in hospital

The British Dental Association (BDA) has called for better oral health care for patients admitted to hospital, as new research shows a lack of oral health training among junior doctors could be impacting on patient care and jeopardising recovery times.  Peter Dyer, BDA chair of hospital dentists, said:  “Dental care for inpatients, particularly the elderly, must be recognised better in our hospitals.”

Campaign to alert patients to the dangers of ‘DIY Ortho’

The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) and Oral Health Foundation have announced their plans for a national campaign to warn patients about the risks of direct to consumer orthodontics – also known as DIY Orthodontics. It will advise patients to visit a trained clinician so that they have the various options open to them explained.  The website is to be launched in December 2019.

Ministers refusing to let go of NHS fines regime

The BDA has expressed grave concerns that the DHSC is backtracking on pledges to break with its discredited policy of automatically fining patients accused of ‘misclaiming’ free NHS dental care. Charlotte Waite, Chair of the BDA’s England Community Dental Services Committee said: "Vulnerable patients will keep turning away from check-ups as long as Ministers refuse to let go of their failed fines policy.”
