GDC publishes results of its consultation on future strategy

In May 2019, the General Dental Council published a consultation on its proposed strategy for 2020-2022. It has now published the results of this consultation. The strategy described the organisation’s vision, values and strategic aims, and provided high-level information on the expenditure plans to support the achievement of those aims over the period.

BDA calls for end of competitive tendering

The BDA has called for the next government to end competitive tendering across the NHS, after the latest fiasco saw a process for commissioning orthodontic services across parts of the West Midlands abandoned yesterday after over 6 months. The decade-long contracts are estimated to be worth over £65 million. BDA Chair Mick Armstrong said: "This fiasco shows why it’s time to end this race to the bottom in our NHS.”

Jo Dawson, dental nurse and determined member of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry is trying to change the policy of the Government-funded School Fruit and Vegetable Service (SFVS) which gives out dried raisins as a snack on the first day of each half term. Jo is a Dental Nurse and Oral Health Educator at Devonshire House in Cambridgeshire.

The North South divide in England is turned on its head when it comes to children’s dentistry and attendance at an NHS dentist, says Dr Robin Mills, a specialist in paediatric dentistry and former BSPD President, who has used NHS Digital figures to produce a map, which shows that the children in the North of England are more likely to have seen an NHS dentist in the last year.

The Herald (Scotland) reports that a Scottish dentist, who was wrongly pursued for more than £50,000 in ’misclaimed’ treatment fees only for the case against him to be dropped days before it was due to go to court, has accused the Practitioner Services Division of making practitioners sick with "protracted, false, and threatening" investigations.

Study finds no evidence to suggest fillings are more successful in treating tooth decay

A three-year trial from the University of Dundee, comparing three treatment strategies for tooth decay in children’s teeth found no evidence to suggest that conventional fillings are more successful than sealing decay into teeth, or using preventive methods alone. The study, named the FiCTION trial, has recently been reported in ScienceDaily.
