Simon Stevens, the former health adviser to Tony Blair, has been appointed NHS England’s new chief executive. He will take over from Sir David Nicholson on April 1. He is currently the president of the global health division of United Health Group, the US-based health company, having been there for nearly 10 years. He is reported to have asked to be paid 10% less than his predecessor.

November is Mouth Cancer Action Month and ahead of it, the Association of Dental Groups (ADG) launched a CPD module focused on the early detection and treatment of the disease, at Showcase in Birmingham. The interactive online module will be available free to all dentists and oral health professionals in the UK. The module is available from the ADG’s website at http://www.dentalgroups.co.uk/

Tim Harker has been elected as the newest member of the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee (PEC). Dr Harker won a by-election for the Wales seat on the BDA’s governing body. He commented: ‘I am delighted to have been elected to the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee and wish to thank the many dentists across Wales who voted in the by-election’. The by-election was triggered by the decision of Dr Stuart Johnston to retire earlier this year.

The British Dental Association (BDA) is calling for a fair deal for dentistry across the UK in 2014 that begins to address successive years of underfunding. Submitting its evidence to the Doctors’ and Dentists’ Review Body (DDRB), the BDA has called for funding boosts for general practice and salaried primary care alike.The BDA evidence argues that general dental practice is coming under increasingly unbearable pressure across the UK.

The British Dental Association (BDA) believes that the signing of a globally-binding treaty on the use of mercury is a sensible outcome that recognises the practicalities of improving oral health. The treaty was endorsed at a meeting in Minamata, Japan on 10 October. It requires nations to phase down the use of dental amalgam fillings, of which mercury is a component, over an appropriate period of time.

Gloucester-based Prima Dental, dental bur manufacturers and exporters, is investing a total of £800,000 into the business to capitalise on the rapidly growing demand for its quality products. Prima Dental has announced that over £700,000 will be invested in additional high performance machinery for its production plant in Gloucester, enabling the company to manufacture over 1.2 million more products each year.

The Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) has received the backing of its members to move ahead with proposals to modernise the way the organisation is governed.
