The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced that 33 new Fitness to Practise (FtP) panel members joined the regulator on 27 August 2013. Nine dentists, 12 lay members and 11 dental care professionals were recruited and will now be phased into hearings through to the end of this year. They will sit on the Interim Orders, Professional Conduct, Health, Performance and Registration Appeals Committees.

Regenerative Endodontics, a new treatment for saving the teeth of adolescents, is likely to enter the dental mainstream, predicts Julian Webber of Harley Street Centre for Endodontics. He has welcomed the new procedure which potentially allows endodontists to save immature posterior and anterior teeth without the need for conventional root canal treatment.

Professor Philip Lamey, who is facing the resumption of a GDC hearing into malpractice allegations this autumn, has failed in a High Court bid to prevent the Belfast Health Trust from deciding on his future employment. Mr Justice Deeney ruled that the authority was justified in holding a meeting, which could see him dismissed without having to wait the outcome of the General Dental Council (GDC) hearing.

The General Dental Council (GDC) has set out its action plan in response to recommendations contained in the Francis Report. The first recommendation of the Francis Report into the failings at Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust is that all those involved in the provision or regulation of health care services must set out how they intend to respond to the report's findings and recommendations. This action plan is the GDC's response to this recommendation.

Professor Steve Field will join CQC from NHS England and will lead the inspection and regulation of primary care services across the public, private and independent sectors. Professor Field said: “I am thrilled at being appointed the first Chief Inspector of General Practice in England. I see this as a wonderful opportunity to highlight what’s good in general practice and dentistry, and to shine a light on what isn’t.”

Speaking at a meeting of MPs at Westminster (All Party Parliamentary Group for Dentistry), Health Minister Earl Howe stressed that it was important that any new dental contract in England must work for dental practices and support their functioning as businesses. It must also support better access and health outcomes for patients and be cost effective, he said.

Statistics released on 22nd August 2013 by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (http://tinyurl.com/k4kkxzm) show that self-employed primary care dentists in England and Wales in 2011/12 had gross earnings decreasing more than total expenses resulting in a drop in taxable income. The figures cover NHS and private income for those working in the NHS, but do not include those working only in the private sector, nor corporates.

Work will start next month on the first integrated, stand-alone dental hospital and dental school to be built in the UK for almost 40 years. The development, in the new Edgbaston Medical Quarter, on the site of the former BBC Pebble Mill Studios, will see a new four-storey dental hospital and school of dentistry constructed, with a build cost of £34m. Totalling 15,465 sqm, it will house a range of services for the public including walk-in emergency dental care, Restorative, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry.
