The number of NHS patients seen in the 24 month period ending June 2013 was 29.8, 11 thousand fewer than the period ending March 2013, according to the latest figures from the Information Centre. The number of Courses of Treatment, delivered in 2012/13, was 249 thousand than the previous year. More fluoride varnishes are being applied. 281 more dentists were working in the NHS. 80% of dentists are associates.

The West Sussex coroner, Penelope Schofield, has ruled that neglect contributed to five of the deaths, at Orchid View in Copthorne, near Crawley. She said the home, then run by Southern Cross, was "mismanaged and understaffed". Ms Schofield also criticised the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which gave the home a "good" rating in 2010, a year before it closed down.

Another successful BDTA Dental Showcase took place at Birmingham’s NEC on 17-19 October. Some 12,000 came to the exhibition. Delegates interacted with over 380 leading dental companies. Tony Reed, Executive Director of the BDTA commented: “I recognise that it’s a challenging market so I’m very pleased with the response to this year’s event”.

The study, led by Professor Ian Needleman of the Eastman Dental Institute, was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. He and his team recruited 302 athletes in total from the London 2012 athletes' village to take part in the study, which involved an oral health check-up and a personal assessment of the impact oral health had on their quality of life and athletic training and performance.

Simon Stevens, the former health adviser to Tony Blair, has been appointed NHS England’s new chief executive. He will take over from Sir David Nicholson on April 1. He is currently the president of the global health division of United Health Group, the US-based health company, having been there for nearly 10 years. He is reported to have asked to be paid 10% less than his predecessor.

November is Mouth Cancer Action Month and ahead of it, the Association of Dental Groups (ADG) launched a CPD module focused on the early detection and treatment of the disease, at Showcase in Birmingham. Tim Harker has been elected as the newest member of the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee (PEC). Dr Harker won a by-election for the Wales seat on the BDA’s governing body. He commented: ‘I am delighted to have been elected to the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee and wish to thank the many dentists across Wales who voted in the by-election’. The by-election was triggered by the decision of Dr Stuart Johnston to retire earlier this year.

The British Dental Association (BDA) is calling for a fair deal for dentistry across the UK in 2014 that begins to address successive years of underfunding. Submitting its evidence to the Doctors’ and Dentists’ Review Body (DDRB), the BDA has called for funding boosts for general practice and salaried primary care alike.The BDA evidence argues that general dental practice is coming under increasingly unbearable pressure across the UK.
