BDJ publishes research on obesity, diabetes and perio disease

The study by R. S. Levine reports that the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes will impact on oral health, especially periodontitis. It reviews recent research suggesting a three-way metabolic relationship between obesity, diabetes and periodontal disease; and suggests periodontitis may adversely affect glycaemic control in diabetics but can be improved by periodontal treatment.

Speaking at a meeting of LDCs on December 6 John Milne said the contract reforms must deliver improved patient outcomes and fair remuneration, while preserving current benefits for practitioners, allowing the transfer of the value of a practice’s goodwill and ensuring financial stability during the transition period. They must also, he added, ensure that practice ownership remains a sustainable proposition.

They are urging dentists to protect themselves by complying with the Statement of Dental Remuneration (SDR) as practitioners can easily fall foul of the regulations.

The devil is in the detail says the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers (NASDAL) of the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement. Speculation around the self-employed status of dental associates ahead of the statement proved to be ill-founded, said Heidi Marshall, a specialist dental accountant. ‘Uninformed rumours continue to crop up about the tax status of associates’, she said, ‘which are not helpful to the profession’.

Howell’s ex-wife will not be prosecuted

The Northern Ireland Public Prosecution Service has confirmed that the former wife of dentist Colin Howell, Kyle Jorgensen (47), would be not be facing any charges. A spokesperson said: "The decision was taken not to prosecute in this case because there was insufficient evidence to provide a reasonable prospect of conviction." Ms Jorgensen has been under police investigation since Howell's arrest in January 2009. She told police she kept his double murder secret for over a decade.

GDC clarifies its position on indemnity

GDC clarifies its position on indemnity

The General Dental Council (GDC) has issued the attached statement on indemnity, following the implementation of its new Standards. This states that there ‘are no new requirements, nor have any requirements changed’ and that ‘registrants are not required to have their own policy and/or defence organisation membership.’ However the GDCs’ priority is to ensure that patients who suffer damage should be able to recover any money to which they might be entitled.

Fake dentist caught at Excel

At the end of February 2013, London’s Excel centre hosted a trade show called "The Professional Beauty Exhibition". Amongst the exhibitors was a company called ‘Whitening Products’, which operates out of Edinburgh. offering tooth whitening training and services. Nabeel Mohammed was on the stand and when spoken to by GDC investigators unlawfully held himself out as being prepared to practise dentistry.
