From 1st January 2014 anyone possessing a postgraduate diploma in a dental subject from a UK higher education institution is eligible for full membership of the FGDP(UK). The Dean, Trevor Ferguson said this about the change: “By recognising qualifications from other UK higher education institutions, we are opening the doors to many people who may have previously been excluded from full membership.”

A struck-off Scottish dentist, who went missing, has been tracked down by the Sunday Mail after being accused of charging taxpayers £800,000 for unnecessary treatment Stuart Craig, 53, who ran his own practice in Auchinleck, was found guilty by the General Dental Council of serious breaches of conduct between 1986 and 2011.

The BDA has announced that, following the EGM on 21st February 2014, PEC members voted to remove Martin Fallowfield from the Chair. A new Chair will be elected by, and come from amongst, the PEC at an election is expected to take place in March, when the Committee meets next. Until a new Chair has been elected, the BDA will be led by the current Deputy Chair of the PEC, Dr Robert Kinloch, a general dental practitioner in Scotland.
Speculation continues as to who will emerge as the new Chair.

He advised them to focus on diversity in their careers, invest in ongoing CPD and training and identify a mentor, to ensure they maintain an ethical and authentic role as a professional.

Anxious patients four times more likely to experience pain than non-anxious patients, according to a recent survey. Now researchers in Japan believe they are closer to an answer after scanning people's brains while playing them sounds of dental drills and suction instruments. People who were terrified of visits to the dentist showed marked differences in their brain responses compared with those who were more relaxed at the prospect, according to work reported at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in San Diego.

There is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against oral cancer screening in asymptomatic adults age 18 years or older by primary care physicians, according to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (November 25, 2013). The researchers also did not find direct evidence of whether screening reduces morbidity or mortality among the general or high-risk U.S. population.

The MHRA has issued a medical device alert about counterfeit dental devices. This was produced in response to a reported failure of a dental handpiece which disintegrated whilst being used in a patient's mouth, fortunately without any injuries. The device had been purchased on-line and subsequent investigation elicited that it was counterfeit.

Dental Protection is delighted that the Department of Health has announced a system of health clearance for healthcare workers living with HIV whose disease is adequately controlled, so that they are able to return to their chosen profession. Kevin Lewis, Dental Director of Dental Protection said; ‘We have been lobbying for a change to the regulations that recognised the latest evidence since 2005.’
