Dental audits need not be a box-ticking exercise, says UK-wide dental defence organisation MDDUS. Dental adviser Claire Renton reminds dentists that audits offer a genuine opportunity to improve the efficient running of a practice and ease the strain on busy workloads. MDDUS has highlighted five key steps of an audit that can improve the way dentists carry out their day-to-day tasks.

Fluoridation could save NHS £millions

The NHS in England could save at least £4 million annually on hospital admissions for the removal of rotten teeth if water fluoridation were extended to areas with high levels of tooth decay, research published in the latest British Dental Journal (BDJ) suggests. The BDA’s Scientific Adviser, Damien Walmsley, said: “This study is a powerful reminder of how water fluoridation saves the NHS money, and how whole populations can benefit from a huge improvement in their dental health.”

On 5 February 2014 Michael Flanagan plead guilty at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court to unlawfully practising dentistry at Power Whitening in Nottingham on 10 January 2012. Mr Flanagan was given a conditional discharge, ordered to pay £355 in compensation and a £15 victim surcharge. He was also ordered to pay costs to the GDC of £1000. BDA protests about lack of DFT places

Dental Foundation Training (DFT) places must be found for the 107 UK final-year students and graduates who have applied for, but not yet been allocated, positions this year, the British Dental Association (BDA) is warning. The BDA’s Chair of Ethics, Education and the Dental Team, Judith Husband, has written to the Department of Health reiterating both the loss to the public purse and tragic personal consequences for aspiring young practitioners if places are not found.

BDA warns that dental students face debts up to £60,000

Dental students who started their degree in 2013-14 face the prospect of staggering levels of debt, in the region of £60,000, a new study suggests.  The research carried out by the British Dental Association (BDA) also found that students who sat their final-year exams in 2012-13 had an average debt of £24,734 at the end of their studies.
