GDPUK members have contributed most of the costs incurred by a Scottish dentist who abandoned a defamation case against a patient, but had to pay the latter’s legal expenses of £10,500. Dentist Keith Watson had lodged the defamation action against Andrew McIntosh, relating to claims that led to him being exonerated by the GDC . When Mr Watson abandoned the case the court ordered him to pay £10,050 in expenses to Mr McIntosh.

The TV programme called Junk Food Kids - who's to blame was partially shot in Leeds Dental Institute and coincides with a co-ordinated offensive to tackle both obesity and dental decay in children and young people by the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD). A new position statement from BSPD highlights the diet and lifestyle factors common to the two conditions which are both alarmingly prevalent among Under 16s.

Greater Manchester and NHS England have announced plans around the future of health and social care with a signed memorandum agreeing to bring together health and social care budgets – a combined sum of £6bn. NHS England claims that the plan ‘puts local people in the driving seat for deciding on health and care services. It is not thought to affect dentistry however.

A woman who was convicted at the High Court in May 2013 of practising dentistry and unlawfully carrying on the business of dentistry – namely tooth whitening - when not registered with the GDC, has been refused permission to apply for judicial review in relation to her failed attempt to challenge the High Court’s decision. She was also ordered to pay £1500 towards the GDC’s costs.

The Faculty Board of FGDP(UK) has elected Dr Mick Horton as the next Dean. Dr Horton will be the 9th person to hold the position of Dean since the Faculty was founded in 1992. He will take office at the start of June. Dr Horton is a dentist in Wrexham, Clwyd.

Bridge2Aid workers say they were shocked by the dental condition of Magalita, someone they met late last year. They say: ‘You would think after 10 years of working in rural areas, we wouldn’t be surprised by what we see any more. But we regularly meet people whose desperation to escape dental pain is shocking, even to our seasoned team.’

Wayne Roberts who runs a private medical clinic in Liverpool had his fine of £15,000 reduced by £3,500 on appeal. The owner of a tanning and beauty salon in Hartlepool and another who ran a beauty clinic in Lancashire were both given a conditional discharge, but ordered to pay the GDC’s costs. A mother and son in Essex also received a hefty fine for tooth whitening.

The Commons Health Committee has held a one off evidence session on children’s oral health. They were concerned about dental decay being the main cause of admission to hospital for children aged 5-9 and the high level of decay among some children. Only three MPs were present and the profession was represented by the CDO and dental head of Public Health England as well as two paediatric specialists.

Inspectors from the GDC have raised concerns about a visit to the Aberdeen Dental School in April 2014. They found that twelve patients suffered poor treatment at a the school. This included damage to an adjacent tooth after work was carried out and tissue damage caused by hypochlorite. Some endodontic patients ended up with perforations, the over preparation of teeth and the wrong tooth being worked on.
