NASDAL releases income figures for 2015/16

The single-handed dentistry model may be a thing of the past in the UK, according to the latest NASDAL (National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers) Benchmarking Report which has just been released and shows a decrease of almost 12% in profits for such practices in two years. Associates see profits slip – again.

Link confirmed between drug use and oral health

A new review has found that dental patients with substance use disorders are more likely to have tooth decay and periodontal disease than the general population, but are less likely to receive dental care. These findings mirror those of poorer oral health those with severe mental illness, eating disorders and alcohol use disorders. It was published online in the scientific journal Addiction.

Kings is top UK university for dentistry

Dentistry at King’s has again been ranked first in the UK, and has risen to fourth in the world, in the 2016 QS World University Rankings. Also in the top 50, UCL London came 6th, Birmingham 19th, Manchester 24th, Newcastle 32nd and Bristol 38th. . Top in the world rankings  was Hong Kong, 2nd Michigan USA and 3rd Tokyo, Japan.

Announcing a ‘Shocking 24% increase in tooth extractions performed on children aged 0-4 in last decade’ Faculty Dean, Professor Nigel Hunt, said: “We’d like to see a significant proportion of the money raised through the Government’s sugar levy spent on oral health education.”.

Professor Crispian Scully CBE has died

Professor Crispian Scully CBE has died

It has been announced that Crispian Scully has died at the age of 71.  He was Emeritus Professor of Special Needs Dentistry and for many years was of Dean of the Eastman Dental Institute in London (1993-2008), gaining the Queen’s Award for Higher and Further Education in 2002/2003 - the first in dentistry. Among many awards he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

GPs given money for rising indemnity costs

NHS England has announced that it has promised help for GPs ‘struggling to cope’ with the rising cost of indemnity payments so that they can offer greater access for patients. The first payments from the GP Indemnity Support Scheme are set to be paid to GP practices to further offset average indemnity inflation. No such scheme has been offered to GDPs.
