Doctors and nurses to be taken out of Tier 2 visa cap but not dentists

The Home Office has confirmed that doctors and nurses are to be excluded from the cap on skilled worker visas, but not dentists or DCPs. The move will mean there will be no restriction on the numbers of doctors and nurses who can be employed through the Tier 2 visa route, but the problem of recruiting dentists from non-EU countries remains acute.

All change at the Faculty Board of FGDP(UK)

Last Friday [June 15th] Mick Horton handed over the reins of the Faculty of General Dental Practice FGDP(UK) to the incoming dean, Ian Mills. Two new vice-deans were also elected, Onkar Dhanoya and Mark Richardson. Earlier last week two new members were elected to the board of the Faculty for the next three years, Suzanne Sykes, (South West division), and Andrew Parashchak, (Mersey & North West division).

Supreme Court decides on self-employed workers’ rights, with comment from BDA

A plumber has won a legal battle for working rights in a Supreme Court ruling, the BBC reports. He had worked solely for Pimlico Plumbers for six years. Despite being paying self-employed tax, he was entitled to workers’ rights, the court ruled. Whether this case will have ramifications for self-employed dentists working as associates is unknown.

Hunt accepts recommendations of Williams Review

Jeremy Hunt has accepted the findings a review into the use of gross negligence manslaughter in healthcare, which said that criminal proceedings should apply only in extreme cases of “very poor performance”. He said staff should be able to learn from their mistakes. It comes after concerns over the case of Dr Hadiza Bawa-Garba, who was struck off after the death of a six-year-old boy.

Pressure builds over high NHS dental charges

The Mirror reports that ‘rising dentist fees’ are forcing patients with toothache to visit A&E and their GP doctor. They say that “Drop in NHS spending on dental care has had repercussions for patients and the resulting strain on docs and hospitals is costing tens of millions. Last week the LDC Conference likewise condemned the charges as a ‘tooth tax’.

LDCs demand better care for adults in care homes

Today dentists from across the UK have called on governments to fund dental services for residents in care homes which are often either poor or non-existent.

The annual gathering of dentists from Local Dental Committees (LDCs), held in Belfast (7-8 June), has said that commissioning dental services for vulnerable older people is rarely a priority and it is time that this shameful situation is reversed.

Belfast welcomes LDC Conference

The 67^th Annual Conference of Local Dental Committees opens in Belfast today, the first time it has been held outside England. Chair, Joe Hendron, told GDPUK: “It promises to be a great Conference. I have tried make it more representative of the whole profession and I look forward to welcoming more female delegates and many younger faces.”
