Chile?s sugar tax sharply reduced sales of sugary drinks

Chile’s sugar tax has led to a 21.6% reduction in sales of sugary drinks in Chile between 2011 and 2015. The study by an international team led by researchers at the University of York seems to show that the tax has been successful reducing the nation’s preference for all things sweet. It reflects early findings of the sugar obesity strategy in the UK.

In a reshuffle, brought about by the resignation of two cabinet ministers, long-serving health secretary, Jeremy Hunt has been moved up to become Foreign Secretary. His place as the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care goes to Matt Hancock MP for West Suffolk, who was formerly at the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport department.

This echoes a finding of the Steele Review of NHS dentistry, which said: “Continuity of care matters to patients and to dentists. It is important in building a relationship of trust and a philosophy of lifelong care.”

New amalgam restrictions from July 1st - advice

The UK Chief Dental Officers have written to all dental registrants to advise them on new restrictions on the use of dental amalgam, effective from July 1. From then dental amalgam shall not be used for dental treatment of pregnant or breastfeeding women, children under 15 years, and deciduous teeth, except when deemed strictly necessary by the dental practitioner based on the specific medical needs of the patient.

Junior minister, Jackie Doyle-Price, said patients should not be turned away from a GP, “and the same applies for dentistry.” She continued: “training is in place to remind people of their obligations.”
