Dental Protection has successfully challenged the GDC’s decision where they tried to re-impose a warning on a dentist for a minor road traffic conviction. Helen Kaney, Head of Dental Services (Scotland) at Dental Protection said:“Dental Protection’s success in challenging unjust and procedurally inappropriate decisions made by the GDC Investigating Committees has benefitted its member and the wider profession.”

The number of dentists that don’t see themselves working within the NHS in five years’ time has increased by 16% since last year, according to a new survey. The sixth Confidence Monitor survey by Practice Plan has found that 86% of NHS dentists don’t see themselves in the NHS by 2023, compared to 70% who answered the same question in last year’s survey.

The number of hospital admissions for tooth decay for children aged 5-9 has increased for the second consecutive year from 25,923 in 2016-2017 to 26,111 in 2017-2018, according to data published by NHS Digital last week. The figure was 26,708 in 2014-2015, dropping to 25,875 in 2015-2016. Tooth decay remains the number one reason that children aged 5-9 are admitted to hospital.

More than 1,200 NHS staff have been disciplined for their use of social media or messaging apps since 2013 and at least 65 of them lost their jobs, according to a report in The Times. Staff ranging from consultants to porters have shared patient information online, posted derogatory messages about colleagues and used sites such as Facebook or Twitter at work.

The Annual General Meeting of the BDA Benevolent Fund was held on September 18th, under the chairmanship of its Patron and BDA President, Susie Sanderson. In August, PEC chair, Mick Armstrong, had urged members to oppose proposals that risked ‘taking the Fund away from its democratic roots.’ However, they were withdrawn before the meeting and not therefore debated.

They say that there has been an outbreak of discussion again in recent weeks in regard to the employment status of dental associates, but there has been no change in the tax authorities’ policy on this subject.

The BSPD (British Society of Paediatric Dentistry) met in Dundee’s Caird Hall last week. The four-day conference saw Claire Stevens hand over the Presidency to Liz Roebuck, consultant in paediatric dentistry in Edinburgh. GDP, Ben Underwood, received an award for his app #BrushDJ. A large-scale trial, which was set up to test three different approaches to the management of tooth decay in children was debated.

HMRC have plans to introduce a points-based penalty system for late payments by businesses and individuals for corporation tax, income tax and self-assessment. As with the existing penalty regime, there will be a ‘reasonable excuse’ get-out, but like the current system, inability to pay and reliance on a third party are not reasonable excuses.
