First students graduate from Peninsula

Forty seven student dentists have graduated from the Peninsula Dental School. They are the first graduating cohort from new dental school. The Dean, Professor Elizabeth Kay, sent her congratulations and said: “I wish them well in their careers and I am confident that, wherever the practise, their patients will benefit from their excellent clinical and interpersonal skills.”

The students’ training marks a milestone for dental education – the Peninsula Dental School has led the way in training student dentists within the community. Students first hone their clinical skills by using the latest virtual technology before carrying out assessments and treatments for NHS patients under supervision, at Dental Education Facilities in Exeter, Plymouth and Truro over the four year course.

Of the first graduating cohort, over 30 have chosen to remain in the South West to continue their vocational training. One of them, Jeremy Lenaerts, said that the Peninsula Dental School had fulfilled a childhood dream. He said: “Ever since I was at school I’ve had an interest in dentistry, so when I heard about the Peninsula Dental School I realised it was too good an opportunity to miss.

Jeremy already has a degree in microbiology and a PhD in biological sciences. He achieved his PhD at the University of Exeter while at the same time working as a research assistant, and he has recently been working for a company that specialises in the development of medical research instruments.
