Imminent Contract Changes Likely To Be Marginal

The BDA has issued a statement (14th June) cautioning the profession that any announcements on dental contract reform made before the Parliamentary summer recess were likely to be ‘only modest, marginal changes to the current discredited target-based NHS dental contract.’
The statement added ‘Formal negotiations on meaningful wholesale reform of the contract are yet to begin.’
The BDA’s statement was issued after Minister Maria Caulfield had ‘suggested’ during a House of Commons during health questions session (June 14th) that there would be announcements on reform before MPs broke up for their summer break. This year’s summer recess runs from 2nd July to 4th September meaning an announcement should be made over the next couple of weeks.
Shawn Charlwood, Chair of the BDA’s GDP Committee said “Real change is not coming this side of the summer. What we’re expecting are modest, marginal fixes to the current failed system, and negotiations on the fundamental change needed have yet to begin. This will be a test of the government’s ambition. Will Ministers provide the resources and reform that millions of patients require, or will they consider a few tweaks to a broken model as mission accomplished?”
