A Professor of Medical Microbiology since 1997, Grace Alderson was Pro-Vice Chancellor of Resources, University of Bradford from 2001–2004. From 1998–2001 she was Pro-Vice Chancellor of Staff and Student Matters and was Dean of the Faculty of Health and Environmental Services from 1994–1998. She is also currently a Director of Dixons City Academy, Partner Governor and Board Member of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Director/Board Member of Salitas (previously Bradford Slings Ltd). Grace is also a member of the Lord Chancellors Advisory Committee in Bradford and a Director/ Board member of The Equality Challenge Unit for HE Sector.
Rosemary Carter (Lay).
Rosemary Carter is a Consultant Solicitor and Mediator, working in private practice in central London and East Anglia. She is also currently a board member of the Office for Legal Complaints, a non-executive director of the Child Maintenance & Enforcement Commission and chair of their Remuneration Committee, and a member of the RICS Surveyors Ombudsman Scheme Board. Rosemary has been a trustee of Gingerbread (the charity for lone parents and their children) since 2002. She is a member and former National Chair of the Solicitors Family Law Association (now Resolution). She was previously a lay member of the Nursing & Midwifery Council, a member of the Civil Mediation Council and member of the Council of the Law Society.
Peter Catchpole (Lay – Returning).
Peter Catchpole worked as a senior executive in the NHS for 30 years, for 20 of these as a Chief Executive. He has also been a Non-Executive Director for NHS Direct, and Chairs the Audit Committee. Peter is a business adviser to the independent health sector. He is an associate lay member of the General Medical Council’s Fitness to Practise Committees and the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Peter is also a County Councillor on the West Sussex County Council.
Suzanne Cosgrave (Lay – Returning).
Suzanne Cosgrave was Chief Executive of Worthing Priority Care NHS Trust from 1993-1998, Chambers Director at Wilberforce Chambers until 2001 and then Operations Director for Corporate Tax at Ernst and Young. In 2005, Suzanne joined the firm of city lawyers, Berwin Leighton Paisner, where she is Senior Business Manager - Real Estate. Suzanne was Vice-Chair of the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine in the years immediately before its replacement by the Health Professions Council. From July 1999 to April 2001 she was secretary of the Legal Practice Management Association.
Elizabeth Davenport (Registrant - Dentist).
Elizabeth Davenport is a Professor of Dental Education at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. She is Chair of several Institute of Dentistry and QMUL committees and working groups and is Chair of the Overseas Registration Examination Board and has in the past been President of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry.
Mary Dodd (Registrant – Dentist - Returning).
Subsequent to qualifying at Cardiff Dental School, Mary Dodd’s career has given her opportunities to work in the three major dental fields of community, general practice and hospital. She currently works in a rural area as a Senior Dental Officer, in Carmarthenshire NHS Trust (part time); as a locum general dental practitioner; and as Postgraduate Dental Tutor for West Wales. Mary has served on the outgoing General Dental Council as the elected Welsh Dental Representative. She has also been the dental member on various Area Child Protection Committees. She is a past lay representative for Wales on the Diabetes UK Advisory Council.
Helen Falcon (Registrant - Dentist).
Helen Falcon is currently Postgraduate Dental Dean/Director of Dental School, NHS Education South Central. She is Vice-Chair, UK Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans and Directors and is also a member of the Department of Health Dental Foundation Training Steering Group. In the past she has been Dental Adviser at Thames Valley Strategic Health Authority; Locum Consultant in Dental Public Health, Buckinghamshire Primary Care Trusts and Director of Education and Learning at Milton Keynes Primary Care Trust. Mrs Falcon has served on several Committees including the British Dental Association, Professions Complementary to Dentistry Committee.
Robin Field-Smith (Lay).
Robin Field-Smith has been an HM Inspector of Constabulary (Personnel, Training and Diversity) since 2000, ensuring over 50 police forces meet their statutory obligations. Previously, Robin had a long career in the British Army (1971–2000), finally as Senior Army Member, Defence Training Review Team (1999–2000), and Deputy Director of Army Educational and Training Services (1997–1999). He is a Member of the Open University Credit Panel and of the City and Guilds Quality and Standards Committee, and Chair of the Learning from Experience Trust, and Trustee of the Royal School Hampstead. He is also Vice President of the National Association of Chaplains to the Police.
Hazel Fraser (Registrant - DCP).
Hazel Fraser works as a Dental Therapist in general dental practice and as a lecturer to Dental Nurses at West Cheshire College. She is also an Education Inspector for the General Dental Council (GDC) and an examiner for the National Certificate for Dental Nurses. She has previously served on the Appointments Committee of the GDC as the Dental Care Professional member and was President of the British Association of Dental Therapists for four years.
Janet Goodwin (Registrant - DCP).
Janet Goodwin is currently the Qualifications Manager for the National Examining Board of Dental Nurses, and has held this position since 2005, and between 2003 and 2004 she was Chairman. She was a Nurse Manager of the Leeds Dental Institute from 1993-2005. She has had several articles and book forwards published in the dental press, and co-authored a very successful training resource, Advanced Dental Nursing and Teamwork 7.
Wakkas Khan (Registrant - Dentist).
Wakkas Khan qualified as a dentist in 2005 at the Victoria University of Manchester, Turner Dental School. He is currently an Associate Dentist and Governor at Christies Hospital, Manchester. He is also a Trustee of the Muslim Youth Foundation and Community Governor at St Chrysostom’s Church of England Primary School.
Anthony Kilcoyne (Registrant – Dentist - Returning).
Tony Kilcoyne qualified as a dentist from Sheffield University in 1983 and, following further specialist training and extensive general practice experience now provides a wide range of dental services. Tony is also a teacher on a variety of dental subjects to the whole dental team and has lectured at major venues as well as delivering small group teaching. Tony has been a dental Vocational Training Adviser for the Yorkshire region for 14 years and during this time has extended his dental activities to help areas of great need
Alison Lockyer (Registrant – Dentist - Returning).
Alison Lockyer qualified in Edinburgh in 1980 and works full-time as a general dental practitioner. Her experience includes having been both a vocational training trainee and trainer. She is an elected member of the British Dental Association’s Representative Body and has always been involved with both local and national "dental politics". Currently Alison chairs the GDC’s Registration Committee. Alison has set up and still runs five dental practices – NHS and private - in Leicestershire and Oxfordshire. They provide dentistry in a wide variety of settings, including within a factory.
Alan MacDonald (Lay).
Alan MacDonald qualified as a solicitor and is currently Deputy Chief Executive of Dunadd Asset Management Ltd, an FSA approved firm of fund managers. He is also Chairman of Voice Technologies Ltd, a non-executive role in this private technology company, and a part-time consultant for Pattison & Sim, Solicitors. Until recently, he was Managing Partner with McFadyen & Semple, Solicitors and also Vice Chairman of the Board and Chair of Audit Committee Scottish Enterprise Renfrewshire, a Public Sector organisation with a £20m budget responsible for economic development.
Kevin O’Brien (Registrant - Dentist).
Kevin O’Brien, an experienced dental academic, is Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching at the University of Manchester’s Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences where he is also a Professor of Orthodontics and Consultant Orthodontist for Central Manchester University Hospital Foundation Trust. He trained as a dentist at Manchester qualifying in 1979 and worked for four years in general dental practice. He then followed a hospital career and completed the Manchester orthodontic specialty training programme in 1986. Following this he was appointed as a Medical Research Council Research Fellow and carried out a PhD research programme into the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment.
Grahame Owen (Lay).
Grahame Owen was a Senior Project Assessor at IBM (UK) Ltd prior to retirement in 2002. He is now a Lay Council member of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, a Conduct Committee member of the General Social Care Council and a non-executive director of Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. He has also been a Trustee of Home-Start Salford, a local charity, and a school governor.
Derek Prentice (Lay - Returning).
Derek Prentice has held a number of executive and non-executive appointments, including Assistant Director with the Consumers’ Association, Chairman of the European Consumer Association, Chief Executive of the Association of London Authorities and is currently the Managing Director of The Customer First Consultancy Limited. Derek has been a London Borough Councillor, a member of the Governing Body of St Thomas’ Medical School, and a member of the Governing Body of King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry. Derek is currently a trustee of King’s College NHS Trust Charitable Trust.
Mabel Slater (Registrant - DCP - Returning).
Mabel Slater qualified as a dental hygienist at Manchester Dental School and gained a Masters Degree in Education, Training and Development at Sheffield University. She was Head of the BSc Unit of Oral Health Science at Manchester before taking up the post of DCP Director at Kings Dental Institute. Mabel has held a number of offices at regional, national and international level, including President of the British Dental Hygienist Association, a Director of the International Federation of Dental Hygienists, Chairman of Royal College of Surgeons panel of Examiners/DCP committee and a member of the Council of the GDC.
David Smith (Registrant - DCP).
David Smith has been Managing Director of Phoenix Dental Casting Ltd since 1992, turning the business around, expanding to a full service laboratory and establishing training schemes. He is also currently a board member, politics and policy director and previous chairman of the Dental Laboratories Association, successfully introducing the separation of the executive from the elected board and giving evidence to the Health Select Committee enquiry on NHS Dentistry. He was appointed to the Clinical Effectiveness & Outcomes Group set up by the Department of Health in response to the Health Select Committee report.
Neil Stevenson (Lay).
Neil Stevenson is Director of Representation and Professional Support of the Law Society of Scotland. He has worked previously in the NHS, and has a Masters Degree in quality management within healthcare. His achievements include being Director and Trustee of LawCare; Trustee of ESU Scotland, member of the Scottish Schools International Debating Council and Associate with the Centre for Diversity in the Professions at Leeds Metropolitan University.
Linda Stone (Lay).
Linda Stone is a self employed Pharmaceutical Consultant, currently holding several positions including: Lay Member, Investigation Committee of the Taxation Disciplinary Board; Lay Fitness to Practise Panellist of the GMC, Pharmacist Member, Investigating Committee of the RPSGB; Lay Member, Qualifications Committee (and Vice Chair since 2007) of the Bar Standards Board; Independent Member Appeal Board of the Prescription Medicine Code of Practice Authority; Panel member of the Master of Pharmacy Degree Accreditation Panels for the RPSGB; and Trustee and former Chairman of the RPSGB Staff Pension Fund. She is a past president and treasurer of the RPSGB.
Anne Marie Telford (Lay).
Anne Marie Telford qualified in medicine in 1975 and achieved a Doctorate in 1982. She was Director of Public Health for the Southern Health & Social Services Board, Northern Ireland for 15 years and has recently retired. She led one of the largest public health teams in Northern Ireland and had responsibility for the Board’s Public Health, Dental, Allied Health Professional, Pharmaceutical and Optometry services. In May 2007 she was appointed as the Northern Ireland Director of Public Health & Care Standards/Medical Director (Designate) of the Shadow Regional Health & Social Care Authority (which was stood down in April 2008).
Denis Toppin (Registrant – Dentist - Returning).
Denis Toppin qualified as a dentist from the University of Glasgow since when he has worked in general dental practice running an NHS family practice in Glasgow. Denis has an interest in dental education and has been a vocational training trainer and adviser as well as teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate courses. He also holds a Masters Degree in Education. Denis was elected as a member of the GDC in 2003. He also holds a part-time post of Assistant Director of Postgraduate General Dental Practice Education with NHS Education for Scotland.
Carol Varlaam (Lay - Returning).
Carol Varlaam has served one term as a lay member of the General Dental Council prior to this appointment. She is currently a Trustee on St George’s Hospital Charity and the Wandsworth Care Alliance. NHS experience includes Chair of the Merton Sutton Wandsworth Health Authority from 2000–2002, Non-Executive Director and Deputy Chair of NHS Professionals Special Health Authority 2004–2007 and Non-Executive Director and Vice Chair of the Southwest London Strategic Health Authority 2002-2006. From 1990-2000, she was Head of Corporate Human Resource Planning at the BBC, leading a team on strategic workforce issues.
