BDA announces honours for 25 dentists

Twenty-five individuals have been recognised in the latest round of BDA Honours and Awards, for their outstanding achievements, their commitment to the BDA and their work for the dental profession. Acting Chief Executive Martin Woodrow said:  "It’s great to see the breadth of recipients from across the profession, reflecting the excellent range of nominations we received. Congratulations to everyone. 

Fellowship  

Robert Donald is a practice owner, honoured for his work as a representative in Scotland, including his current role as Chair of the BDA Scottish Council, and his long service on the Scottish Dental Practice Committee, representing dentists nationally and at a UK-wide level.  

Lisa Howells is honoured for her work for dentistry in Wales, including her role as former Deputy Chief Dental Officer for the Welsh Government. She has always been a passionate advocate for the dental care of people with special needs and those with complex conditions.  

Grainne Quinn is a community dentist, honoured for her work representing salaried dentists in Northern Ireland, working tirelessly to secure the implementation of the new Community Dental Services contract in 2019. 

Keith Percival is a GDP, honoured for his work at a local level in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, including setting up a local PASS (Practitioner Advice and Support Scheme), to help support colleagues in times of need. 

Simon Utting is a Consultant in Special Care Dentistry and is honoured for his work for the Community Dental Service over many years, including serving as CDS President in 2016/17, and his many other roles on committees over the years. 

 

John Tomes Medal

The John Tomes Medal honours members of the dental profession or other distinguished professionals, who have given outstanding services to dentistry.  

Derek Richards is a retired dentist, honoured for his editorship of Evidence-Based Dentistry since its foundation in 1998, and his significant contribution to the dental profession and dental publishing over the years. 

 

Life membership

Martin Dyer is a GDP, honoured for his long service to the BDA with the Middlesex and Herts Branch.

Ken Hughes is a community dentist, honoured for his work for the CDS in Wales.

Robert Kinloch is a retired dentist and is honoured for being a long-standing representative of the profession in Scotland.

Philip Martin is a GDP, honoured for his long service to the BDA with the East Midlands Branch, as well his charitable work for DentAid. 

William Nichols is a GDP honoured for his work with the BDA’s Benevolent Fund as well as his long-standing involvement with the Northern Counties Branch. 

Alun Rees is a GDP, honoured for his long involvement supporting the BDA at a local level and the dental professional at national level, in his career as a dental business coachand especially for his efforts supporting younger members of the profession. 

Stephen Shimberg is a GDP honoured for his long service as a representative on the GDPC and for his involvement with his LDC in the West Pennines.  

Janine Thomas is honoured for her work for as a community dentist in Wales.  

Kenneth Wilson is a consultant in Special Care Dentistry.  

 

BDA Roll of Distinction

Awarded for outstanding services to UK dentistry.  

Fenella Barnes for her work on the BDA’s new indemnity product.

 

Certificate of Merit for Services to the Association

An award that recognises special service at any level of dentistry in the UK.  

Mark Collinson a GDP, awarded for his long service to the North West Branch. 

Dave Cottam is a GDP and chair of GDPC, awarded for his long service as a representative for the profession at the local and national levels, including the Central Counties Branch. 

Joanna Breach is a retired community services dentist, awarded for her work as a long-serving volunteer for the BDA Museum. 

Neil Farmer is a GDP, awarded for his commitment to the Northern Ireland Branch. 

Maria McElholm is a GDP, awarded for her commitment to the Northern Ireland Branch.  

Charlotte Waite is awarded for her outstanding work as Chair of the England Community Dental Services Committee, working tireless to represent the CDS.

Certificate of Merit for Services to the Profession

The Certificate of Merit for Services to the Profession is an award that recognises special service either nationally or internationally and enables academics or those who have contributed to advancements in dentistry to be recognised.  

Anthony Lynn a GDP, awarded for his dedication to the dental profession through his decades of service to the BDA and his LDC in Wessex.  

Andrew Taylor is awarded for his work at a local and national level representing dentists across Cornwall and further afield.  

Joy Harrild Award for Young Dentists

The Joy Harrild Award for Young Dentists is a relatively new award, enabling the contributions of younger dentists to be recognised.

Periodontist Reena Wadia is an outstanding younger dentist, who is incredibly proactive and worked to both further her own skills and supporting others through her passion for sharing her knowledge.
