New website for Dental Check by One Campaign launched
A new website to serve as a focal point for the Dental Check by One (DCby1)campaign has been unveiled by the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry. Thecampaign was launched in 2017 by BSPD with the support of the CDO England.

The campaign was aimed to promote children going to the dentist when their first teeth come through, or by the age of one at latest. Sara Hurley, CDO England, recognising the value of giving parents early access to a dentist, encouraged DCby1, clarifying that dentists can claim a fee for an appointment at which a pre-cooperative child refuses to open their mouth.

The campaign’s impact has been widely felt. Many organisations, dental, medical and healthcare, have got on board and between 2016 and 2018, an additional 2.5% of children under two have seen a dentist.

Dental checks for young children are available in many dental practices with an NHS contract. The new website exists to explain to parents why an early visit to the dentist is so important and to provide resources and information for the dental profession.

Claire Stevens, spokesperson for BSPD, paid tribute to the dental profession and the support it has given to DCby1. “The campaign has outgrown our Society’s website, reflecting that it now has its own momentum. I encourage any practice which is not yet on board but would like to grow the service it offers to families to make use of the resources on the new website.”

“To all parents, I would say, dental decay is almost always preventable. Taking your child to your dental practice from when their first teeth come through or by the age of one at the latest means you can tap into helpful advice to keep those baby teeth healthy.”
