New minister for dentistry appointed at Department of Health

Seema Kennedy MP was appointed as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care on 4 April 2019. Her responsibilities include dentistry, as part of primary care, and public health. She takes over from Steve Brine MP, who resigned over Brexit.

It is Seema Kennedy’s first ministerial post having been previously Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister (since 2017). She has been the Conservative MP for South Ribble in Lancashire since 2015.

Seema Kennedy was born in Lancashire in 1974, daughter of an Iranian Muslim father and Irish Catholic mother. She studied Oriental Studies (French and Persian) at Cambridge and graduated in 1997. After Cambridge, she took a Legal Practice Course before qualifying as a solicitor. Soon after, she became a board director at her family business, Tustin Developments, which owns commercial properties across the North West. Kennedy is married with 3 children. A multilingual, she also speaks French and Persian.
