Dentistry minister resigns after Brexit vote

Steve Brine MP for Winchester and Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Primary Care, including Dentistry and Public Health resigned from the Government last night to vote for an amendment tabled by Oliver Letwin allowing Parliament to take control of Brexit process. Two others resigned, Richard Harrington, business minister, and Alistair Burt, who was previously a dentistry minister.

GDPUK News Editor writes: “The so-called Letwin amendment was passed by 329 to 302 votes, a majority of 27. It allows Parliament to vote on various alternatives to the Prime Minister’s Brexit withdrawal agreement and is a huge blow to Mrs May.

“Although in the context of the Brexit debate, dentistry is a minor matter, for those involved, dentists, DCPs and patients its problems remain, whoever is in charge. Any resignation inevitably leads to delay, which is the last thing the profession and patients need.

“Steve Brine, a long-time ally of former Secretary of State, Jeremy Hunt, was a diligent MP and minister, but many would say largely ineffective. He had a somewhat rocky relationship with the BDA, although always protested a willingness to listen.”
