Faculty dean awarded PhD

Congratulations to Ian Mills, Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) on being awarded a PhD by the University of Plymouth, following his work as an academic fellow in general dental practice at Peninsula Dental School. The title of his thesis was “The Delivery of  Person-Centred Care in General Dental Practice” and sought to identify the key dimensions of such care with respect to dentistry.

Ian told GDPUK that his research included a systematic review of the literature and qualitative research involving interviews with patients and general dental practitioners. The research identified the importance of relational aspects of care and described four key themes which were considered to be crucial to the patient experience, Connection,  Caring attitude, Communication and Control. A significant portion of the research has already been published with 5 peer reviewed articles previously accepted for publication and a sixth due to appear in the British Dental Journal later this year.

Dr Mills said: “The NIHR ACF programme was established to help clinicians develop a range of skills including research expertise with the hope that there would be a greater focus on clinical research and direct translation into improvements in patient care. 95% of dental care is provided within primary care but only a fraction of research is conducted within general dental practice. It is hoped that giving dentists the opportunity to develop research skills will increase the knowledge and expertise in general dental practice and hopefully shift the balance towards research in primary care.
