Fewer NHS courses of treatment delivered

A total of 39.2 million courses of treatment (83.2 million UDAs) were delivered in England in 2017/18 by the NHS according to statistics published by NHS Digital. This was a fall of 1.8% compared with the previous year. 22 million adults (50.7%) and 6.9 million under 18s (58.6%) were seen by 24,306 dentists (84% under the GDS contract).

NHS Digital has published NHS Dental Statistics for England - 2017-18, Annual Report. It shows that 22.1 million adults were seen in the NHS in the 24 months prior to July 2018. This is 98,445 fewer than a year before. For children the figures were 6.9 million – 58.6%, a rise of 0.4% over the previous year. There is a north/south split with 56.1% adults (63.4% children) being seen in the North of England, but only 44.3% adults (49.8% children) being seen in London.

 Courses of treatment (COTs) fell by 1.8% over the year to 39.2 million, a fall of 711,580 compared with 2016/17. 58.2% of these were for Band 1 treatments. 11.4 million COTs were delivered for under 18s, with 72.0% of these being Band 1 treatments. Paying adults accounted for more than half of all COTs (53.5%), children 29.1% and exempts 17.4%. For Band 3 COTs, the numbers delivered to paying adults are about the same as non-payers, despite there being far more of the former than the latter.

The Courses of Treatment equated to 83.2 million UDAs, 2.5 million fewer than in the previous year. 4.2 million Units of Orthodontic Activity were delivered in the year.

45.7% of adult clinical treatments were for scale and polish. 47.9% of clinical treatments for children were for the application of fluoride varnish. Fissure sealants for adults increased by 3.0% to 44,688 and for children there was a 15.7% increase to 213,658.

A total of 24,308 dentists performed NHS activity in 2017/18, an increase of 301. 36.5% of them were under 35. Women formed 59.0% of the NHS workforce and 41% were male.
