Hancock promises to help ‘fed up’ NHS staff

NHS staff are fed up with being undervalued, the new health secretary believes and they should not be taken for granted. Matt Hancock said it was abundantly clear that staff were unhappy, and he pledged to deal with bullying and allow more flexible working in an effort to stop doctors and nurses leaving the service.
Writing for the Health Service Journal, Mr Hancock said: “Two things are abundantly clear: first, how hard NHS staff work. And second, how people feel undervalued.” A sense of public service “can’t be taken for granted”, he said, adding: “I am determined to ensure duty is rewarded by the sort of system people deserve. That means taking on issues like bullying and harassment, recruiting and retaining staff and improving options for flexible working.”
He also said that IT could “radically change the world for the better” in the NHS, as it had done in banking and transport. He said: “Nowhere does technology have greater potential to improve lives than in healthcare.” Mr Hancock - @MattHancock - acknowledged that technology should be led by patients’ needs, while enthusing over how computers could spot cancer, organise medical records more effectively and treat people with mental ill health online.
